Job Description Summary / TWC Summary
The multimedia journalist (MMJ) assembles and promotes Texas Southern University news stories, news releases, media advisories, photography and videography for local and national media outlets and public engagement for his/her assigned beats. In particular, the MMJ will have responsibility for creating written and visual content that promotes the university’s top-tier research, academic programs, student experience, alumni, partners, and special events. The MMJ has the capacity to communicate and synthesize complex materials and package highly technical information in an easily understandable manner through writing, social media, photography, and video. The candidate will have a successful track record in journalism or media relations, managing tight deadlines, proactively pitching stories, and creating meaningful work on a routine basis. The position requires a thoughtful, curious, organized and result-oriented professional, accustomed to working in a fast-paced environment.

Essential Duties Summary
  • Conveys complex subject matter in an engaging and easy-to-understand style by shooting, writing, and editing news stories highlighting university programs, administrators, faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, and corporate partners, for TSU News, feature articles and other printed and digital communication, as well as posting stories, photos and video online.
  • Cultivates faculty, staff, students and other sources for stories and expert commentary.
  • Creates video content for social media to promote TSU.
  • Assist with editing as necessary.
  • Serves as backup for other team members as needed.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Hiring Range
$69,333.15 - $88,399.77

Education
Bachelor’s degree.

Required Licensing/Certification
Valid Texas Driver’s License preferred.

Knowledge of:
  • Federal, State, Local, and County laws.

  • Adobe video editing software
  • Microsoft Office Professional or similar applications.

  • Shoot video.

Work Experience
Four (4) years of related professional experience in journalism or public relations preferred.

Ability to maintain the security or integrity of critical infrastructure, which may include communications systems, computer networks and systems, cybersecurity systems, electrical grid, hazardous waste treatment or water treatment system.

Working/Environmental Conditions
  • Standing and/or walking.
  • Handling objects up to 25 pounds.
  • Using or carrying equipment.
  • Stoop, bend or lift.
  • May require routine travel.
