Job Summary:
Under the supervision of the School Principal, the teacher provides direct instruction to students in accordance with each student's Individual Education Plan. In addition to providing instruction in specific subject areas, the teacher shall focus clearly on the development of positive attitudes toward education and socially acceptable behavior.

Actively participate in ongoing quality improvement activities of The Legacy Treatment Services including but not limited to: serving as a member of a quality improvement team, customer input, incident/accident and client grievance review, peer record review and program evaluation/quality improvement projects.
- Maintain accurate daily attendance records.
- Maintain appropriate classroom discipline and provision of an atmosphere conducive to learning.

Participate in the development of each child's Individual Education Plan.

Develop and implement lessons that follow student IEPs, Common Core State Standards, NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards and School approved Cosmetology curriculum.

Selection and ordering of appropriate instructional equipment and materials.

Prepare quarterly evaluations, Progress Reports and Report Cards for each student in relation to his/her IEP goals and objectives.

Utilize multiple assessment strategies evaluating students’ progress when drafting Progress Reports and Report Cards.
-
Attend staff meetings and meetings with parents and/or school district personnel.
-
Participate in a minimum of twelve hours of training per year and assist in the training of Legacy Treatment Services staff. Training curriculum to include, but is not limited to: (a) principles of behavior management; (b) alcohol, tobacco and substance abuse; (c) human sexuality and AIDS; and (d) suicide prevention.

Fulfill annual continuing education and professional development requirements established by the Department of Education

Maintain accurate daily records of students’ academic performance utilizing Mary A. Dobbins School’s Grade Book system or another principal approved grading system.

Monitor students’ behavioral performance utilizing Mary A. Dobbins School’s Behavior Modification Point Sheet.
-
Communicate students’ daily performance to residential and clinical staff utilizing The Legacy Treatment Services Class Notes system
-
Provide direction to Paraprofessionals assigned to Music and ensure that they comply with school policy and procedures.
-
Deliver curriculum to students utilizing a learning center model of instruction, whereby students are provided with individualized and small group instruction and remediation.

Serve and actively participate as a member of School Committees (i.e. Curriculum, Professional Development and Safety.)
-
Provide direct management and supervision of students in non-instructional settings such as hallways, library, dining room, etc.
-
Participate and assist with the organization, preparation and implementation on special school wide activities/programs(i.e. Graduation, Black History Month, International Day, Year Book, Field Trips, Spelling Bees, Bulletin Board Contests, Science Fair, Hispanic Heritage Month).

Participate in after school and evening school sponsored events (i.e. Open House/Back to School Night, Art Exhibit and Auction, Parent Groups) when requested by administration.

Prepare reports and participate in Treatment Team Meetings.

Build relationships with parents/guardians, families, school districts and social service agencies to support student’s learning and overall well being.

Maintain a supportive, safe and respectful learning environment.
-
Embrace technology as a tool of learning.

Document significant incidents and physical restraints involving students utilizing The Legacy Treatment Services Critical Incident and Restrictive Behavior Management Practice Reporting System.

Provides learning opportunities that support intellectual, social and physical development of students.
-
Demonstrate teamwork, cooperation and courtesy in the workplace.
-
Demonstrate competency in areas of instruction and effectrively communicate subject matter in an interactive and engaging manner that promote learning, inquiry and problem solving.

Develop meaningful individualized, multisensory and creative lessons that are sensitive and responsive to cultural diversity..

Submit lesson plan book to school principal on a weekly basis for review.
-
Escort and provide assistance to students traveling from one location to another location.
-
Enforce the Student Code of Conduct utilizing the school’s Behavior Management Program.

Attend Legacy Treatment Services Open Houses and evening functions (i.e. Art Exhibit/Parent Groups).
-
Utilize verbal de-esclation interventions to defuse potentially volatile situations prior to escalation and passive physical restraint techniques to prevent seriously acting out students from harming themselves or others.

Utilize the “Nurtured Heart Approach” to enhance student self-esteem and promote positive student behaviors.
-
Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students, their families, or treatment.

Create and Implement musical lessons to students that develop voice, tone, tempo and rhythm skills.
-
Train, rehearse and lead students in musial performances for school programs and special events.
-
Develop and maintain an effective musical program for students.
-
Understand potentials and skills of each student and guide individual students according to their skills.
-
Recommend maintenances and repairs for musical instruments when necessary.
-
Collaborate with school administration to organize musical performances and productions.
-
Perform all additional duties as assigned by the Principal.
Qualifications:

Must hold a New Jersey State certification as a Teacher of Music

Must be highly qualified in the area of instruction
-
Excellent interpersonal and child management skills
-
Must maintain yearly 12 hour requirements in behavior management, suicide prevention, substance abuse, and HIV and sexuality
-
Must have CARI-CHRI, physical and PPD test completed prior to or upon hire
-
Must have physical repeated every three years
-
Must attend cultural competence trainings when available and attend ongoing trainings related to population served
-
Must possess a valid driver’s license
