A Network Security Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the security of an organization’s network infrastructure. The role ensures that systems, networks, and data are protected from unauthorized access, breaches, and other security threats. The engineer also plays a key role in developing security policies, conducting risk assessments, and responding to incidents to maintain a secure and resilient network environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, configure, and maintain secure network architectures, including firewalls, VPNs, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), and other security devices.
- Monitor network traffic and security alerts to identify and respond to potential threats in real time.
- Conduct regular vulnerability assessments and penetration tests to detect and mitigate risks.
- Implement and manage network access control, authentication, and encryption protocols.
- Develop and enforce network security policies, standards, and best practices.
- Collaborate with IT, SOC, and infrastructure teams to ensure end-to-end security across systems.
- Investigate security incidents, perform root cause analysis, and implement preventive measures.
- Maintain documentation of network configurations, incidents, and change management processes.
- Stay updated with emerging security technologies, trends, and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Security, or related field.
- Proven experience as a Network Security Engineer, Network Administrator, or similar role.
- Strong knowledge of network protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPN, etc.).
- Hands-on experience with security technologies such as firewalls (Fortinet, Palo Alto, Cisco ASA), IDS/IPS, SIEM, and endpoint protection.
- Familiarity with network monitoring and analysis tools (e.g., Wireshark, SolarWinds, Splunk).
- Understanding of cybersecurity frameworks and standards (ISO 27001, NIST, CIS Controls).
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Relevant certifications are a plus (e.g., CCNP Security, CEH, CompTIA Security+, CISSP, or Palo Alto PCNSE).
