POSITION: New Teacher Mentors Up to 13 Positions!!
LOCATION: As assigned.
REPORTS TO: Director of Director of Federal Programs, Curriculum, and Technology / Building Administrator
Evaluation: Evaluations conducted as defined in West Virginia Board of Education Policy 5310 and BCBOE Policy 3250.
LENGTH OF EMPLOYMENT: For the 2025-2026 School year only.
SALARY: $450 (pro-rated) per mentee. Mentor may have up to 3 mentees.
EFFECTIVE EMPLOYMENT DATE: Upon Board Approval

CERTIFICATION/QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid teaching certificate licensing the individual to teach in the specializations and grade levels pursuant to WV Code §18A-3-2.
- Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10, as appropriate. Please contact BCS before scheduling a background check to ensure that you have the correct codes to ensure that your background check is processed properly. Please do NOT use any previous code provided by the WVDE.
- Meet the qualifications outlined in WV Code §18A-3-2a.
- Perform duties as described in the job description below.
- Have five or more years of teaching experience.
- Have a completed the WVDE Mentorship course within the last five years and have a certificate on file with the Braxton County Board of Education, be a National Board-Certified Teacher, or be willing to complete the WVDE training to acquire such on Septmber 24-25, 4:00-7:00, PM and show a completed certificate.
- Be a full-time employee at Braxton County Schools.
- Work at the same programmatic level as the teacher being mentored. (Early Education, Elementary Eduction, Middle, High School, CTE)
- Demonstrate effective standards-based instructional practices as shown through educator evaluations with a rating of accomplished or distinguished. Evidence should be presented with application.
- Demonstrate attention to detail as it applies to accountability and data collection.

JOB SUMMARY:
Provide support and guidance to new teachers with 0-1 years of experience. For a list of potential mentees, please contact the Director of School Improvement.
"Mentoring" means working under the direction of the Director of School Improvement, Federal Programs and Child Nutrition, but with the guidance of the school principal to improve the professional practice, knowledge and skills of other teachers employed in Braxton County Schools. The mentor/mentee relationship is met to be on-site, job embedded professional development for first year teachers. Mentoring includes, but is not limited to, an assigned role in the comprehensive system for teacher induction and professional growth within the Braxton County Schools framework. Additional supports are provided through monthly trainings.
JOB DESCRIPTION: (Based on Charlotte Danielson's Frameword for Teaching)
- Assisting planning and preparation for the classroom to include content, pedagogy, setting instructional outcomes, aligning assessments with instruction and standards.
- Working with the mentee on instruction to include student communication, understanding how to forecast the week, lesson planning, questioning and discussion techniques, engaging student in the learning process for high learner outcomes, using assessments as an instructional tool, and demonstrating flexibility in instructional approach including using the model it, try and connect it approach to instruction.
- Assisting mentee in establishing goals and monitoring progress towards completion of those goals.
- Bi-weekly check-in with mentee (in-person is required) once a month.
- Providing the mentee feedback on their lesson plans to make sure they demonstrate a standards-based focus, scope and sequencing of content and include the county required curriculum.
- Providing the mentee guidance on organization and time management
- Observation of the mentee and providing feedback on lesson implementation and classroom management (1 day of professional leave will be provided to allow for this per semester)
- Allow the mentee to observe the mentor if needed.
- Assist the mentee in understanding how to develop a classroom environment that establishes high expectations and a rapport with students that includes a culture of learning, staying on task and engaging in standards-based activities.
- Assist the mentee in developing positive professional work responsibilities that are grounded in reflective teaching, maintaining accurate, communicating with families and participating in the professional community to be a life-long learner.
- Complete all necessary mentoring documents per Director
- Document all visits and provide a brief summary of meeting notes
- Provide Director with all documents at the end of the mentoring session.
- Work collaborative with building administration

The duties of this job require the employee to drive to and from various schools throughout Braxton County. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff members.
Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Most commonly, the educational setting is indoors with outdoor settings for recess and filed trip activities. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate (20-60 dB). Exceptions include gymnasiums as well as vocational/technical laboratories where the noise levels may be moderate to loud (60-90 dB).
