Part-Time Remote Reporter / Writer

Location: Remote (Iowa-based preferred)

Nelson Media Company is seeking a part-time remote reporter/writer to contribute stories to our growing group of weekly newspapers across Iowa. This role is ideal for a curious storyteller who enjoys covering the people, events, and issues that shape small-town communities.

Our newspapers focus on hyper-local journalism — highlighting schools, local government, businesses, community events, and feature stories that matter to our readers.

Responsibilities

• Write articles covering local government meetings, school events, feature stories, and community news
• Conduct interviews with community members, local officials, and business leaders
• Identify and pitch story ideas relevant to our communities
• Produce well-written, accurate, and engaging articles on deadline
• Collaborate with editors and our newspaper team remotely

Compensation

• Paid per article
• Typical pay ranges from $20–$30 per story, depending on length and complexity

Qualifications

• Previous writing, journalism, or reporting experience required
• Strong interviewing and storytelling skills
• Ability to meet deadlines and communicate consistently with editors
• Familiarity with small-town or community journalism is a plus
• Iowa-based writers strongly preferred
