Job Description – NICU Staff Nurse

Position Title: Staff Nurse – Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Department: Nursing Services – NICU
Reporting To: Nursing Superintendent
Location: Hosur

Position Summary

The NICU Staff Nurse is responsible for delivering specialized nursing care to critically ill and premature newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The role involves monitoring vital signs, administering medications, assisting in neonatal procedures, supporting families, and ensuring adherence to hospital standards, patient safety, and evidence-based nursing practices.

Key Responsibilities

1. Clinical Care & Monitoring

  • Provide specialized nursing care to premature and critically ill neonates.
  • Monitor and record vital signs, oxygen saturation, and overall clinical status.
  • Administer medications, IV fluids, and nutrition as prescribed.
  • Assist in neonatal procedures, including intubation, catheterization, and resuscitation.
  • Manage incubators, ventilators, CPAP machines, and other NICU equipment.

2. Patient Safety & Infection Control

  • Ensure strict infection control protocols in NICU.
  • Maintain sterile techniques during all procedures.
  • Check and prepare emergency equipment and supplies.
  • Adhere to NABH/JCI quality and safety standards.

3. Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate nursing notes, flowcharts, and medical records.
  • Report any change in the neonate’s condition to the pediatrician/neonatologist immediately.
  • Assist in preparing discharge summaries and family instructions.

4. Family Education & Support

  • Counsel and educate parents about neonatal care, breastfeeding, and follow-up.
  • Provide emotional support and clear communication regarding the baby’s progress.

5. Teamwork & Coordination

  • Collaborate with neonatologists, pediatricians, anesthetists, and other clinical teams.
  • Assist doctors during procedures and emergencies.
  • Guide junior nurses and nursing students in NICU practices.

6. Training & Development

  • Participate in nursing education, skill-building programs, and hospital training sessions.
  • Stay updated with the latest neonatal care guidelines and protocols.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: B.Sc Nursing / GNM with valid Nursing Council Registration.
  • Certification: Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and Basic Life Support (BLS) mandatory.
  • Experience: Minimum 2–4 years of experience in NICU in a multispeciality hospital preferred.

Work Conditions

  • Rotational shifts including nights, weekends, and emergency on-calls.
