Job Summary
The NICU Staff Nurse is responsible for providing specialized nursing care to critically ill and premature newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The role involves continuous monitoring, advanced neonatal care, infection control, family support, and coordination with neonatologists and multidisciplinary teams.
Key Responsibilities
1. Patient Care
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to neonates, including preterm and critically ill babies.
- Monitor vital signs such as heart rate, respiration, temperature, and oxygen saturation.
- Assist in neonatal resuscitation and emergency stabilization.
- Administer medications, IV fluids, and nutrition as prescribed.
- Operate and monitor NICU equipment like ventilators, CPAP, incubators, and phototherapy units.
2. Clinical Procedures
- Perform neonatal assessments and document findings accurately.
- Assist doctors in procedures such as intubation, central line insertion, and lumbar puncture.
- Maintain fluid balance and feeding charts (NG tube / breastfeeding support).
- Handle and care for low birth weight and high-risk neonates.
3. Infection Control
- Follow strict NICU infection control protocols.
- Ensure hand hygiene and aseptic techniques at all times.
- Maintain sterile environment and prevent cross-infections.
4. Documentation
- Maintain accurate nursing notes and electronic medical records.
- Record treatment details, medication charts, and nursing observations.
- Report any abnormal findings immediately to the doctor.
5. Family Support & Counseling
- Educate parents about newborn care, breastfeeding, and hygiene.
- Provide emotional support to parents of critically ill babies.
- Guide parents on discharge care and follow-up instructions.
6. Equipment Management
- Ensure proper functioning of NICU equipment.
- Report malfunctioning equipment immediately.
- Maintain stock of emergency drugs and consumables.
7. Coordination
- Work closely with neonatologists, pediatricians, and other departments.
- Participate in clinical rounds and case discussions.
- Support emergency and referral cases.
Qualifications
Education
- B.Sc Nursing / GNM from a recognized institution.
- NICU or neonatal care certification preferred.
Experience
- Fresher or experienced candidates can apply.
- Minimum 1 year NICU experience preferred for senior roles.
