In the U.S., Black women die from breast cancer at a higher rate (40%) than women from all other racial identities. While African American women screen at similar rates as White American women, they have a 40% higher breast cancer mortality rate. The elevated mortality rates of African-American women are related to behavioral, healthcare accessibility, and genetic factors. Stage at diagnosis is an important behavioral factor that contributes to mortality. Approximately 15% of African American women receive a late-stage breast cancer diagnosis (i.e., stage 4), which has lower 5-year survival rates (28%) compared to early-stage breast cancer (99%).

Applicants for this position will assist Dr. Haynes in investigating methods for calculating breast cancer screening rates across two systems. They should have advanced expertise in SQL and have experience using statistical or programming packages like R or Python. The applicant will need to develop SQL code from scratch based on the MHealth Fairview EMR. This will require excellent analytical skills, note-taking, and attention to detail. Secondly, we will use this new information and apply it to the MN Department of Health, All Payers Database. Students will need knowledge on claims data to understand the differences between these two systems. We may use R or Python to improve these techniques. Finally, students will be responsible for drafting documents for presentations and preparing sections of a manuscript for publication.

Key Responsibilities

  • Write and optimize SQL queries using the M Health Fairview EMR.
  • Analyze and compare screening metrics across EMR data and the MN Department of Health All-Payer Claims Database (APCD).
