Under general supervision, the Nurse Practitioner will provide independent, high-complexity care for patients with liver disease, including metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and liver transplant-related conditions. This is an experienced APP role requiring a high degree of clinical autonomy.
The NP will manage a full patient panel across both in-person and telehealth settings, perform comprehensive assessments, order and interpret advanced diagnostics, and develop complex care plans. The role includes triaging patient needs, coordinating care across multidisciplinary teams, and supporting access initiatives to improve patient flow and outcomes. In addition to outpatient responsibilities, the NP will provide periodic backup coverage for the inpatient hepatology service to support continuity of care across settings. The NP is expected to function as a key contributor within the hepatology program, supporting best practices, collaborating closely with the care team, and contributing to quality improvement and program development efforts.
Participation in hepatology-related clinical research and protocol-driven care may also be required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be a graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program.
California Registered Nurse (RN) license, California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license, and Furnishing License Certification.
Current Nurse Practitioner Specialty Certification in an aligned specialty with the practice area from one of the following Nursing Boards: AANP, ANCC, NCC, PNCB, AACN.
BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to obtain BART within 6 months.
Six (6) months or more of experience as a licensed Nurse Practitioner.
Direct hepatology clinical experience is required, with demonstrated ability to independently manage patients with chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis and its complications.
Experience providing care via telehealth, including video and telephone visits, with ability to assess, triage, and manage patients in a virtual setting.
Advanced knowledge of hepatology, including evaluation and management of MASLD, viral hepatitis, portal hypertension, HCC, and pre/post liver transplant care.
Experience ordering and interpreting hepatology-specific diagnostics (e.g., liver imaging, elastography, lab trends, biopsy results).
Proven ability to manage complex patient populations with multiple comorbidities in an outpatient setting.
Strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Proficiency in electronic medical record systems and clinical documentation (Epic preferred).
Demonstrated experience providing patient education, counseling, and longitudinal disease management.
Excellent communication, organizational, and care coordination skills.
Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment.
Current University of California NPIII employees may be hired at the NPIII level pending review and approval by Health Human Resources and the UCSD Advanced Practice Council.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $176,624 - $247,157 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $84.59 - $118.37
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
