NP or PA- Acute Psychiatry Service - MGH

This is a 36-hour evening position.

As a member of the Acute Psychiatry Service (APS) Provider Team, the Advanced Practice Provider will assume the role of responding clinician in the assessment and care of patients with psychiatric and substance use disorders, including diagnosis, treatment, education, and management of the patient, in particular the patient awaiting admission to a psychiatric inpatient facility. The patient may be evaluated or seen in follow-up while in the APS, the main ED or an associated observation/ boarding unit.

The APP will collaborate with all the members of the care team including EM and APS physicians, nurses, resource specialists, social workers, case managers, administrative staff, etc. to ensure optimal care. The APP will facilitate and coordinate the operational, administrative and collaborative efforts of the multidisciplinary team.

  • Prescribes medications.
  • Determines level of care needs for patients and initiates referrals, transfers, and consultations as needed for behavioral health and substance abuse disorders.
  • Participates in and facilitates quality assurance and performance improvement activities for evaluation of structure, process, and outcome criteria as it relates to clinical practice.
  • Identifies factors contributing to outcomes, such as complications, increased length of stay, and over utilization of services and actively participates in problem solving these issues, in collaboration with appropriate staff.

Skills and Experience:
  • Minimum of 2 years advanced practice experience, strongly preferred, in adult mental health, preferred.

Education/Degree:
  • Bachelor’s and Master’s in Nursing Required - Adult Psychiatric Mental Health
  • Master Physician Assistant Required- Adult Psychiatric Mental Health
Licensure, Certifications:
  • Current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner/ Physician Assistant - Adult Psychiatric Mental Health in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Current federal and state-controlled substance certification/registration.


Job Summary

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a licensed provider. The NP is responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of patients, medical and/or surgical, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation.

Essential Functions
  • Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural setting
  • Performs complete histories and physical examinations
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests
  • Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings
  • Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes and discharge summaries
  • Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population
  • Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures

Experience
Experience as a nurse practitioner 0-1 year preferred
