The Plutonium Facilities Engineering (PFE) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to deliver innovative solutions for the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. We are seeking a Nuclear Facilities Engineering Manager 3 to serve as the Deputy Group Leader within the Rapid Response Team.

In this leadership role, you will support Plutonium Facilities Engineering by directing, coordinating, and rapidly deploying technical resources to address high-priority, emergent, and time-sensitive mission needs. You will ensure the Rapid Response Team provides immediate engineering support to facility operations, maintenance, safety, system engineering, and project execution activities.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Lead and deploy qualified engineering resources to respond to emergent issues, operational priorities, and facility needs requiring accelerated scheduling, analysis, or design.
  • Oversee rapid scoping, decision-making, and resolution of engineering issues to minimize impacts to operations, safety, and mission-critical activities.
  • Ensure engineering design changes, field support, and requests for information (RFIs) are completed safely, on schedule, and within budget.
  • Manage short-term and real-time staffing adjustments to meet urgent facility or program demands.
  • Maintain strong communication channels with Operations, Systems Engineering, Maintenance, Projects, Safety Basis, and ES&H to ensure rapid alignment and execution.
  • Provide leadership ensuring compliance with LANL Conduct of Engineering (CoE), Configuration Management (CM), DOE requirements, and nuclear safety expectations.
  • Support strategic and long-range organizational planning with the Group Leader, including staffing, workload forecasting, training, and performance management.
  • Foster a culture of safety, transparency, and operational excellence within the Rapid Response Team.
  • Lead or support improvement initiatives targeting processes, policies, workstreams, and engineering delivery efficiency.
  • Utilize expert-level Microsoft Excel capabilities for rapid data analysis, scheduling, resource management, and KPI development.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple concurrent engineering needs in a dynamic mission environment with shifting priorities.

As a Nuclear Facilities Engineering Manager 3, you will support the Plutonium Facilities Engineering (PFE) Division by providing strategic and operational leadership in alignment with the division's mission to deliver innovative engineering solutions for national security. You will assist the Rapid Response Team (PFE-RRT) Group Leader in setting direction and priorities while ensuring technical and administrative execution is consistent with nuclear facility requirements, the LANL Conduct of Engineering (CoE), and Configuration Management (CM) program expectations. Your oversight will ensure that engineering functions-including design, field execution, procurement, project management, and discipline-specific engineering-are performed in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local codes, regulations, and standards. You will also lead efforts to resolve technical and personnel challenges, enabling sustained engineering performance in support of reliable, safe, and mission-aligned facility operations.

In addition, but not limited to, the incumbent will assist the Group Leader in developing staffing plans, in accordance with customer requirements and within budget constraints, perform recruiting and hiring activities to implement those plans, and develop staff through training, mentoring and qualification programs.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Leadership
Central to this position, we are seeking a qualified and talented individual that has demonstrated Leadership and innovation in managing a multi-disciplined engineering organization.
The ideal candidate will have prior experience managing technical teams and interfacing with other engineering disciplines.

Knowledge and Experience
This position will serve in a management role and provide expert knowledge and experience in engineering and administration for facility projects and on-going operations and maintenance within nuclear facilities is required. Specific knowledge and experience sought for includes:


  • Leadership of technical organizations supporting nuclear facility operations-including maintenance, systems engineering, safety basis development, and project execution.
  • Strong track record implementing and interpreting Conduct of Engineering (CoE) processes to ensure safe and reliable facility modifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong customer and stakeholder relationships, negotiate requirements, and manage conflicts constructively.

Training/Certifications: A professional license (PE) in an engineering discipline from a recognized licensing board or certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP) is preferred but not required.

Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:


  • Knowledge of LANL activities and nuclear operations including project execution and management, legal, procurement, construction, environmental safety and health (ES&H), and quality assurance.
  • Knowledge/experience of LANL Engineering Standards Manual; LANL Conduct of Engineering procedures; and DOE Orders and Standards related to nuclear facility design, construction, and project management.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards in common use at DOE and DOD facilities (ASME, NQA-1, IBC, IEBC, IEEE, NFPA, etc).
  • Experience developing and managing project design estimate and schedules.
  • Understanding of US Government contracting or procurement methods/processes, specifically related to subcontract Architecture & Engineering agreements.
  • Prior experience working for/with the DOE or DOD in an engineering, operations, maintenance, or project management capacity.
  • Prior operations, engineering, maintenance, or project management experience working at nuclear, accelerator, high-explosives, or other high-risk/high-consequence facilities.
  • Experience in developing and managing budgets.

Work Environment: Work in a noisy environment, work near sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, work near machinery with moving parts, working overtime or an irregular schedule

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Term Employee: Regular-status Laboratory employees applying for term-status positions may retain regular status with approval of the cognizant Principle Associate Director.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
