Summary :
The Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for coordinating the patient flow to obtain requested imaging studies in a fast paced environment. This is achieved through order verification, Quality Assurance of the imaging equipment, proper patient identification and obtaining appropriate imaging following approved policies and protocols. This is to include proper patient preparation and education which may begin prior to the patient arrival. The technologist may be involved in part of a procedural team. The technologist will treat patients of all age groups which includes infancy, pediatrics, adults and geriatrics. The technologist must be knowledgeable of age specific protocols. The technologist must be flexible to cover a variety of shifts with weekend, holiday and non-restricted call duties required as needed.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the care and safety of patients undergoing treatment and use of equipment to minimize hazards of electric shock, burns and extraneous radiation to patients.
- Determines most suitable anatomical posture and positions and shields patients accordingly.
- Able to assess patient pain interfering with imaging procedure and makes appropriate physician contact for intervention.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Performs highest quality imaging consistent with prescribed examination; documents any deviation.
- Interacts professional with patient/family.
- Understands and practices proper use of all equipment, never operates equipment inconsistent with manufacturer's instruction.
- Communicates effectively with other departments to remove barriers with patient throughput and care.
- Prepares and administers radiopaque mixtures for patients.
- Operates Med-Rad power injector.
- Communicates effectively with ordering physicians to ensure patients receive the best care and fastest turnaround time.
- Performs venipuncture on all patients requiring administration of IV contrast.
- Obtains written or verbal consent from patient or other responsible party before administering IV contrast.
- Shows flexibility in covering vacant shifts as department needs arise.
- Prepares and maintains records and files as directed.
- Maintains QA/QC records for CT scanner; performs QA exposures on water phantom weekly.
- Maintains QA records for incidence of IV contrast allergic reactions and reports findings to hospital's Pharmacist.
- Orders all non-stock needed in CT department.
- Maintains and replenishes special procedure supplies (needles, catheters, etc.) as directed by the Radiologist.
- Orders all IV contrast directly through Materials Management.
- Maintains CT cleanliness and restocks supplies for the next shift.
- Accepts and acts upon constructive criticism to upgrade abilities.
- Offers assistance and/or instruction to coworker.
- Participates in job training to trainees/students.
- Seeks new responsibilities and offers to help with additional projects during downtime.
- Sends images via teleradiology during off hours.
- Operates required aspects of PACS System.
Other Information :
- Licensed as Radiologic Technologist Required. Degree: An associate degree (typically 2 years) or bachelor’s degree (4 years) in nuclear medicine technology or a related field. NEEDS TO HAVE CNMT certification or an RT(N) certification
