The Nurse Educator (Site-Based) is responsible for leading all clinical education, competency validation, and training initiatives within an assigned facility. This role ensures that nursing staff, correctional staff, and interdisciplinary team members are trained, competent, and compliant with MEDIKO standards, regulatory requirements, and contract expectations.

This position is embedded at the site level and directly impacts staffing readiness, staff utilization, and quality outcomes by ensuring employees are prepared to safely and effectively perform their roles. The Nurse Educator partners closely with site leadership to support onboarding, ongoing education, Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), and professional development initiatives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Site-Based Training & Education

  • Lead all new hire clinical orientation and onboarding training at the facility, ensuring readiness to safely assume duties.
  • Deliver ongoing education and skills training for nursing staff based on site needs, regulatory requirements, and identified gaps.
  • Provide training to correctional officers and facility staff on healthcare-related topics (e.g., emergency response, infection control, medication processes).
  • Coordinate and maintain annual training requirements, including mandatory competencies and refresher education.
  • Ensure all staff complete required training in alignment with MEDIKO standards and contractual obligations.

Competency Management & Compliance

  • Conduct initial and ongoing competency validations for clinical staff, including post-orientation evaluations.
  • Track, monitor, and maintain documentation of staff competencies, certifications, and required training.
  • Manage Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for nursing staff, ensuring compliance with licensure requirements.
  • Partner with leadership to ensure staff maintain active and compliant licensure, certifications, and credentials.

Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI)

  • Support and lead CQI initiatives at the site, identifying trends, gaps, and opportunities for improvement in clinical practice.
  • Participate in audits, chart reviews, and performance improvement activities tied to clinical quality and patient outcomes.
  • Develop and implement targeted education plans based on CQI findings, incident trends, and regulatory feedback.
  • Partner with site leadership to drive measurable improvements in clinical performance and compliance metrics.

Operational & Site Support

  • Collaborate with Health Services Administrator (HSA) and Director of Nursing (DON) to align training with staffing needs and operational priorities.
  • Support site readiness for audits, inspections, and accreditation processes.
  • Assist in policy and procedure education and implementation at the site level.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and mentor to staff, promoting critical thinking, accountability, and professional growth.

Informatics & Systems Support

  • Provide support and training for staff on EMR/EHR systems, ensuring accurate and compliant documentation practices.
  • Assist with onboarding staff to clinical systems and workflows.
  • Identify workflow or documentation gaps and partner with leadership to improve system utilization and efficiency.

Commitment to Quality Service

  • Promote a culture of patient-centered care, safety, and accountability within the facility.
  • Reinforce MEDIKO’s standards of care through education, coaching, and real-time feedback.
  • Ensure training and education efforts support staffing stability, staff confidence, and quality patient outcomes.

Other Duties

  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support site operations and organizational goals.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • A current, valid state(s) licensure, certificate and/or credentials documenting ability to practice in applicable role (i.e. CMA, LPN, RN, LMHP, etc.).
  • A High School diploma or GED is required.
  • An Associate’s or Bachelor's degree in Healthcare, Nursing, or a related field is preferred but not required.
  • 1-3 years of experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in a correctional healthcare or similar environment.
  • Experience in roles that involve direct patient care or administrative support in a regulated environment is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare regulations, policies, and procedures as they relate to the correctional setting is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively, adhere to protocols, and deliver high-quality service in a fast-paced, structured environment.
  • Active CPR/BLS certificate required (American Heart Association/American Red Cross guideline approved).

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout a secured correctional facility for extended periods.
  • Frequent reaching, bending, kneeling, and stooping, with occasional lifting and carrying of up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies, which may require rapid movement, physical intervention, or assisting in patient transport.
  • Manual dexterity and sufficient visual and auditory acuity to perform essential clinical and administrative tasks, including operating medical equipment, computer use, and effective communication with staff and patients.
  • Exposure to a correctional environment, including interaction with incarcerated individuals, correctional officers, and facility staff; requires maintaining situational awareness and adherence to security protocols at all times.
  • Adherence to basic safety precautions due to potential physical risks and exposure to hazards, including blood, blood-borne pathogens, and other workplace hazards. Employees will be required to complete OSHA training and maintain compliance with all relevant safety standards and regulations.
  • Ability to work in a high-stress environment with potential exposure to infectious diseases, biohazards, and unpredictable patient behavior.
  • Flexibility to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, based on facility needs.
  • This role is designated as essential staff and is required to report to work during facility closures, emergencies, or inclement weather events.
