- Direct and Supervises administrative and clinical activities of the ward / Floor.
- Responsible for daily and vacation scheduling of ward / unit staff in absence of head nurse.
- Completes patient care requirements by scheduling nurses’ shifts; assigning nurses to patients and ensuring nursing operational standards are met.
- Ensure the Nurse: Patient ratio is maintained based on the scope of unit / floor by considering patient condition and competency of the allocated staff.
- Maintain quality assurance of nursing documentation and Patient records
- To ensure Mentor / mentor body system is following while allocating patient by the team leader
- Make sure the inter departmental transfer of patient is happening in a safe manner.
- Make sure all vulnerable patients are identified and the proper assessment / reassessment is done at periodic intervals.
- Verify all patient required indents / refunds both drugs / medical consumables & all service entries are done in a safe and secure manner.
- Storage of medications to be cross checked for manufactures' recommendations
- Ensure all incident reports of near misses, medication errors & adverse events are routed to Quality department through proper channel for analysing RCA & CAPA.
- Make sure the correct protocol as defined is following by the staff while on verbal order.
- Make sure correct medication rights are following by the staff during medicine administration.
- Ensure all nursing personnel’s are adheres to standard precautions and hand hygiene guidelines while handling indicated patients.
- Supervise all nursing personnel’s are adheres to safe linen management practices
- Supervise all nursing personnel’s are adheres to cleaning, disinfection and sterilization practices.
- Supervise all nursing personnel’s are adheres to handling, storage and disposal of bio medical waste
- Supervise for Isolation (barrier and reverse barrier nursing) practices while on nursing care
- supervise for the implementation processes for sorting, labelling, handling, storage, transporting and disposal of hazardous materials by the nursing personnel
- Ensure all nursing personnel’s are aware of Nursing Quality Indicators and the data is forwarded to quality department for analysing study.
- Ensures the implementation and evaluation of patient care standards.
- Coordinates patient placement for optimal utilization of beds and equipment based on patient care needs.
- Ensures patient / nurse allocation is carried out based on nursing competency and patient care needs.
- Coordinates for Departmental orientation, mentorship and cross training program for ward staff.
- Ensures staff competency checklists are maintained and updated as required.
- Directly communication with designated medical staff regarding ongoing patient management.
- Ensures patient clinical management is carried out as per doctor’s order and based on patient care needs.
- Ensures preventive maintenance program adhered to for all equipment and reports and records deficiencies in equipment function to appropriate department.
- Supervises and evaluates staff performance as required by nursing administration.
- Communicates with and supports patient and relatives as per individual needs.
- Any other assigned responsibilities on a need basis as identified by the Nursing Director.
- Participate in direct patient care working as a team member and promote the highest standards of evidence based practice.
- Directly support staff as appropriate in the provision of care of the patient, providing supervision as necessary.
- Assist with identifying and reporting accidents and incidents and take necessary action.
- Assign and coordinate patient care and related duties.
- Collaborates with Nursing Director to obtain necessary human and material resources.
- Recognize others needs for assistance and intervene as necessary.
- Make decisions and convey appropriately to team members.
- Demonstrates effective communication by defining rationale for assignments, reporting problems or concerns to the DNS / Nursing Superintendent and liaising with other departments.
- Coordinates patient admission/discharge/transfer arrangements. Arrange for continuing outpatient services and arrange for home care referral as needed.
- Maintain awareness of patient condition and staff workloads.
- Complete and exchange of information between the oncoming and off going nursing staff by communicating patient care needs and unusual events.
- Ensure patient/staff confidentiality.
- Maintain patient records accurately and promptly in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Assist in maintaining safe custody of drugs in accordance with hospital policy and procedure.
- Act as facilitator in the supervision and teaching of less experienced staff.
- Facilitate the orientation programme for new members of staff.
- Coordinates with Education Department orientation, mentorship and cross training program for the department staff.
- Work as preceptor/mentor in the support and development of junior staff and new joinees.
- Communicates with and supports patient and relatives as per individual needs.
- Assist in monitoring staff performance and participates in staff review with Nurse Supervisor.
- Collaborates with DNS / Nursing Superintendent to obtain necessary human and material resources.
- Participate in direct patient care working as a team member and promote the highest standards of evidence based practice.
- Assist in monitoring reporting staff sick leave absenteeism.
- Keep up to date with relevant clinical and professional developments in nursing.
- Be aware of the role of the nurse in handling complaints, according to Continuous Quality Improvement (QI) policy and procedure.
- Participate in program of clinical supervision.
- Appropriately manages variances behaviourally environment occurrences or refers to the appropriate person.
