Under general supervision of the Chairman of the Department of Hematology/Oncology, Academic Medical Center, and the Director of Cancer Services and Ambulatory Care, is responsible for evaluation of, and development of treatment plans for hematology/oncology patients. Assists in the care and management of hematology/oncology patients to include, but not limited to, admission history and physical, ongoing assessment and intervention, coordination of inpatient and/or outpatient care, and discharge planning. All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age specific needs of the patient.

Functions as a clinical expert by providing direct, episodic health care to prevent and meet the acute symptomatic and palliative care needs of patients with cancer. Practices collaboratively with the interdisciplinary health care team to provide comprehensive health assessments; differential diagnosis; ordering, supervising and interpreting diagnostic tests; prescribing pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments. Participates in the development of a patient care plan with the registered nurses and the attending physician. Provides educational and liaison supports to health care team members. Participates in the education of patients, families, and caregivers regarding any disease process, procedures, post-procedural care, and expected outcomes and progress. May perform other duties as requested by the attending physician, including, but not limited to, evaluation of patients in the outpatient setting and triage of emergency visits to the outpatient setting. May collaborate with the attending physician in the writing of chemotherapy orders. Always maintains due regard for compulsive communication between the Nurse Practitioner and the attending physician or his/her delegate. Assists in clinical research projects, including data acquisition, entry and analysis as needed. Participates in quality improvement teams, and other committees, as needed. Maintains quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control in accordance with established hospital department policies, procedures, and objectives.
Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
