Department Details

Marshfield Medical Center – Weston is seeking an ICU Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join our team in Wausau/Weston, Wisconsin. The NP/PA should be a skilled member of the allied health care team, who is expected to practice at the highest level of their licensure. This requires providers to stay up to date with the latest evidence based medicine. The NP/PA would work collaboratively with the Hospitalist to facilitate acute care of the adult patient. This individual works collaboratively with physicians, nurses, case managers and other health care disciplines utilizing a team approach. The nurse practitioner participates in all aspects of care of the hospitalized patient including admissions, discharge, daily rounds and patient education.

Position Details

In this role, you will have the support of a physician while caring for patients in the ICU. Procedures included in this role will include ABG, arterial line, paracentesis, thoracentesis, and central venous catheter placement.

Job Summary

The Critical Care Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides advanced nursing care to critically ill and unstable patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or other high-acuity settings. Working collaboratively with physicians, specialists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, the NP delivers evidence-based, compassionate care, performs advanced procedures, and plays a key role in improving outcomes for patients with life-threatening conditions. Conduct comprehensive assessments of critically ill patients, including history-taking, physical exams, and diagnostic interpretation

Develop and implement individualized care plans in collaboration with the critical care team

Perform or assist with advanced procedures (e.g., central line insertion, arterial line placement, intubation, chest tube insertion, etc.) as credentialed

Manage ventilators, vasoactive drips, and other ICU-level interventions

Monitor patient progress, recognize changes in condition, and adjust treatment plans accordingly

Document patient care clearly and timely in the electronic health record (EHR)

Provide education and support to patients and families regarding diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis

Participate in daily multidisciplinary rounds and facilitate care coordination

Contribute to quality improvement initiatives, clinical protocols, and evidence-based practice

Serve as a resource and mentor for nursing staff, students, and residents

Respond to in-hospital emergencies and Rapid Response Team calls, as appropriate

This position also provides on-call coverage outside of regularly scheduled hours.

Qualifications

Completion of a master’s, postmaster’s, or doctorate from an accredited nurse practitioner program accredited by the Commission on the Collegiate of Nursing Education or National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.

If Licensing prior to August 1, 1995, master's degree in nursing is preferred.

Minimum 1–2 years of experience in a critical care or ICU setting preferred

Current licensure as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner in each state of practice.

Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) permit to prescribe controlled substances in each state of practice.

State Controlled Substance License (if required by State)

National board certification as an Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP-BC) or ACNPC-AG), Acute Care Adult (ACNP-BC). Additional certifications require approval from a market executive leader: Family (FNP-BC) or (FNP–C), Adult-Gerontology Primary Care (AGPCNP-BC) or (A-GNP) certification

Obtains and subsequently maintains required specific competencies and certifications as outlined on privilege form.
