Basic Function and Responsibility:
Provides professional nursing leadership and operational direction with and through nursing supervisors/managers for the practice of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Advanced Practice Nurses and others involved in clinical patient services in the Ambulatory Care unit(s). Participates as a member of a leadership team in Ambulatory Care Services (ACS) and in planning and coordinating care delivery for ACS patients. Provides and continually improves health care services, education and research in support of the mission and goals of the Health System. Ensures that processes meet or exceed regulatory and professional standards. Supervises the quality of nursing and clinical assistive staff services provided to patients in Ambulatory Care Services within the Surgical Specialties segment. Initiates and implements policies, program planning, and evaluation related to the Surgical Specialties segment. Maximizes patient and staff satisfaction within human systems and material resources.
Organizational Relationships: Supervision Received: Administratively responsible to the Associate Chief Nursing Officer, Ambulatory Care Services and University of Michigan Medical Group (UMMG) segment. Collaborates with the Ambulatory Clinical Practice Leader (CPL/CDOO) and Clinical Administrators in the Ambulatory Care unit(s) regarding unit operations. Works collaboratively with ACS administrators, medical director leads, and support teams. Collaborates with leaders to integrate standards and quality improvement across surgical service lines. Has decision-making authority regarding changes that affect nursing services within the service lines for Ambulatory Care ? Surgical Specialties. Supports the alignment of UMSN with ACS processes, practices for student education, faculty practice, and research, as appropriate.
Supervision Exercised: Responsible for the management and nursing leadership functions of nursing services for Ambulatory Care Services. Responsible for clinical competence for regular and temporary employees and Licensed Practical Nurses, and the professional practice of all levels of Registered Nurses. Collaborates with medical leads, administrators, and operations managers in the administrative and functional supervision of nursing and clinical assistive staff. Ensures standardized nursing and clinical practice across Surgical Specialties.
Ambulatory Care Services: Surgical Specialties:
? Surgery inclusive of: General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Comprehensive Wound Care, Thoracic Surgery, and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
? Otolaryngology
? Ophthalmology
? Urology
Four (4) or more years of progressively responsible ambulatory care nursing experience.
Four (4) or more years of demonstrated competence and leadership in an ambulatory care management role are necessary.
Nurse Leadership certification or completion within two (2) years of accepting this position or when eligible to certify, whichever comes first.
Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role.
Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC). Certifications must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). See full list here.
