Summary
Under general direction of the WIC Supervisor, the Nutritionist provides direct nutrition counseling, breastfeeding promotion and technical health screening services in WIC clinics, and community settings. You'll play a key role in helping clients improve nutrition understanding and practice, access supportive programs, and maintain healthy lifestyles.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Complete full nutrition, health, and breastfeeding assessment including assessment of anthropometric and hematological data.
- Determine client concerns and assign risk. Offer WIC RD/RDN services to all high-risk clients, including clients receiving Class III formulas.
- Using Client Centered Service skills, provide the following: WIC Program Explanation, Nutrition education, including breastfeeding encouragement, education, and support.
- Certify eligible clients for WIC services, assigning food package benefits, including substitutions and special formulas as needed (allergy, dietary need, cultural preference).
- Maintain knowledge of CCPHD programs and community resources, making referrals as appropriate.
- Maintain compliance with CCPHD and Michigan WIC policies and procedures including client confidentiality, chart audits, and management evaluations.
- Perform a variety of clerical duties including data entry, answering phones, appointment scheduling, and reception.
- Participate in staff meetings, committees, public health quality programs, emergency and professional development training as assigned.
- Participate in outreach programs as assigned. Assist in developing, maintaining, and distributing program information, education, and materials.
- May be assigned to serve in Michigan WIC Breastfeeding, Nutrition Education, or Outreach Coordinator role.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications
- Knowledge acquired through the completion of a two-year Degree with training in the field of nutrition (Registered Dietetic Technician with emphasis in community/clinical nutrition) or equivalent degree. Others may qualify based on Michigan WIC program and USDA standards.
- Ability to perform anthropometric measures and hematological testing (training is provided).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office. Must become proficient in program related software within 90 – 180 days contingent on the software.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups from a variety of identities, cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies.
- Empathy, including the ability and willingness to attempt to understand another person's culture or perspective through listening and inquiry.
- Flexibility, including the ability to respond and adapt to new and changing situations.
- Ability to travel between County buildings and attend off-site meetings as needed, with reliable transportation.
- Bilingual skills are desired (Burmese, Spanish, Swahili).

- Position is primarily based in Battle Creek but may require travel to Albion location.
- Clinic/Office environment.
- Travel may be required.
- May have contact with infectious disease and exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
- On-call availability to respond to emergencies (e.g., program-related and public health emergencies).
- Extended workdays (beyond 8 hours/day) and weekends or holidays may be required.
- May encounter threatening people and other dangerous situations.
