Performing under the direction of the RN/LPN and as a member of the unit-based patient care team, the Oncology Patient Care Assistant/Unit Coordinator (PCA/UC) performs duties of indirect patient care and operations. Indirect patient care activities include, but are not limited to, transport, ordering/providing food to patients, restocking and/or obtaining patient care supplies, setting up/disposal of chemotherapy buckets, and cleaning chairs between patients. In addition, the Oncology PCA /UC is responsible for responding in a timely manner to the needs of patients and family members and taking a proactive role in the efficient operation of the unit. They function within policies, procedures and guidelines of Sturdy Memorial Hospital in accordance with Joint Commission, CDC and OSHA standards. In addition, the Oncology PCA/UC will perform clerical, receptionist and unit coordinating duties on individual patient care units. Operational/clerical activities included, but are not limited to, entering lab orders, making patient appointments, checking in patients, tracking and reviewing data/ reports, taking meeting minutes, ordering supplies, reviewing/resolving coding, coordinating with support group leaders, developing documents for support groups, transporting medications to and from the pharmacy, managing the Microblog for pickup of medications from pharmacy, answering phone calls, and collaboration with the Clinical Coordinator(s) and Service Line Manager.
Education/Training

High School Graduate or equivalent

Previous knowledge of medical terminology, typing, computer skills and Unit Secretary experience preferred

Successful completion of orientation
Licenses/Certification:
- BLS competent (obtain within 60 days of hire)
Required Qualifications and Skills:
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skills needed to assist in providing indirect patient care, good organizational skills, personal maturity, accuracy and flexibility.
