The Operating Room (OR) Nurse – Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics is responsible for providing safe, high-quality, and efficient perioperative nursing care to patients undergoing plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgical procedures. This role requires advanced clinical knowledge, technical proficiency, and meticulous attention to detail in supporting both surgical teams and patients throughout the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Preoperative Duties
- Prepare the operating room for plastic and aesthetic surgical procedures, ensuring all instruments, equipment, and supplies are available and sterile.
- Verify patient identity, surgical consent, and preoperative assessments.
- Collaborate with surgeons and anesthesia teams to plan individualized patient care.
- Ensure adherence to infection control, safety, and sterilization protocols.
2. Intraoperative Duties
- Assist the surgeon during operative procedures, including microsurgery, reconstructive, and cosmetic interventions (e.g., facelifts, liposuction, breast augmentation, abdominoplasty).
- Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and maintain strict aseptic technique.
- Monitor patient’s vital signs and surgical field; promptly report any abnormalities.
- Handle surgical instruments and aesthetic equipment such as cautery units, endoscopic devices, and laser systems.
- Maintain accurate intraoperative records and count verification of instruments and sponges.
3. Postoperative Duties
- Provide immediate postoperative care, ensuring patient safety, comfort, and stability.
- Participate in postoperative wound assessment and dressing application for aesthetic cases.
- Educate patients on postoperative care instructions specific to cosmetic or reconstructive surgery.
- Monitor for complications and ensure timely escalation of clinical concerns.
4. Additional Responsibilities
- Participate in quality improvement, infection control, and patient safety initiatives.
- Assist in developing and maintaining plastic surgery-specific OR protocols and checklists.
- Mentor junior nurses and participate in ongoing training in advanced aesthetic surgical techniques.
- Maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical conduct at all times.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – required.
- Perioperative Nursing Certification (CNOR) – preferred.
- Experience: Minimum 5–8 years of operating room experience, with at least 3 years in Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in cosmetic and reconstructive surgical setups and instrument handling.
- Knowledge of laser systems, endoscopic instruments, and microsurgical techniques.
