Job Overview

The Operation Theatre (OT) Manager is responsible for the overall management, coordination, and efficient functioning of all operating rooms within the hospital. This role ensures high standards of surgical care, patient safety, staff performance, and regulatory compliance. The OT Manager provides leadership to nursing and technical staff, oversees scheduling, manages resources, and works closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and perioperative teams to optimize surgical services.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Leadership & Department Management

  • Supervise and lead OT nursing staff, technicians, and support personnel.
  • Oversee recruitment, onboarding, training, and performance evaluations.
  • Create staff schedules, manage leave requests, and ensure adequate staffing levels for all shifts.
  • Foster a culture of safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

2. Clinical & Operational Oversight

  • Ensure adherence to sterile techniques, infection control protocols, and perioperative safety standards.
  • Monitor and support adherence to WHO Surgical Safety Checklist and hospital SOPs.
  • Oversee pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative workflows to ensure smooth operations.
  • Collaborate with surgeons and anesthesiologists to resolve operational issues quickly.

3. Resource & Inventory Management

  • Ensure availability of surgical instruments, equipment, supplies, and medications.
  • Coordinate with CSSD (Central Sterile Supply Department) for timely sterilization and equipment turnaround.
  • Plan preventive maintenance and repairs of OT equipment in collaboration with biomedical engineering.
  • Manage OT inventory, procurement, and cost control.

4. Scheduling & Coordination

  • Oversee daily operating room schedules, emergency OT availability, and prioritization of cases.
  • Coordinate with surgical teams to minimize delays and cancellations.
  • Monitor OT utilization and enhance efficiency through improved scheduling practices.

5. Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, NABH/JCI standards, and governmental regulations.
  • Conduct audits, inspections, and safety rounds to identify improvement areas.
  • Investigate and report incidents, near-misses, and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain accurate records of OT activities, infections, adverse events, and quality metrics.

6. Communication & Interdepartmental Collaboration

  • Serve as the primary point of contact between OT staff, surgeons, anesthesiologists, nursing administration, and other departments.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, mortality and morbidity reviews, and quality committees.
  • Communicate policy updates, procedural changes, and training needs to OT team members.

7. Training, Education & Professional Development

  • Provide ongoing training in infection control, surgical safety, equipment handling, and emergency procedures.
  • Facilitate continuing education and competency validation programs for OT staff.
  • Support training for new nurses, interns, and students in perioperative care.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Education: Diploma in OT Technology (with extensive experience).
  • Experience: 4+ years of experience in Operation Theatre nursing or OT technology. with demonstrated leadership skills
  • Experience in multi-speciality OTs preferred.
  • Skills:

- Strong leadership and team management capabilities.

- Excellent knowledge of surgical procedures, aseptic techniques, and perioperative care.

- Proficiency in OT scheduling and resource management.

- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.

- Familiarity with EMR systems and OT management software.

- Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced surgical environment.
