Role Summary
As an OT (Operating Theatre) Technician, you will assist the surgical team in preparing the operating theatre, equipment, instruments, and supplies; ensure surgical procedures run smoothly; maintain high hygiene and safety standards; and support post‑operative cleaning and turnover of the theatre.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare the operating theatre for surgical procedures — ensure availability and functioning of instruments, equipment, consumables, sterile supplies, lights, suction, monitors.
- Assist in setting up the surgical table, positioning of patient (in coordination with the anesthesia & nursing team), draping, and ensuring sterile field integrity.
- Hand over instruments to surgeons and scrub staff during procedures.
- Monitor equipment functioning (e.g., monitors, diathermy, lights, suction) and report malfunctions or downtime.
- Maintain and restock instrument trays, surgical packs, and consumables in the OT.
- Ensure strict adherence to infection control, sterilization protocols, cleaning and disinfection of theatre surfaces, equipment, and instruments after each case.
- Assist in the transfer of patients in and out of the OT, ensuring correct protocol is followed.
- Maintain documentation related to surgical cases, instrument usage, equipment logs, waste disposal, theatre turnover time.
- Coordinate with biomedical engineering and maintenance teams for regular servicing of OT equipment.
- Ensure proper disposal of biomedical waste and adhere to safety and regulatory norms (e.g., biomedical waste segregation, safe sharps handling).
- Participate in continuous improvement activities: maintain theatre turnaround time targets, implement safety checklists, support theatre audits.
- Attend training on new equipment, protocols, or procedures as required.
Qualifications & Experience
- Diploma or Certificate in OT Technician / OT Technology / Operation Theatre Technology (or equivalent) from a recognized institute.
- Ideally 1‑3 years (or specify) experience as OT Technician in a hospital or surgical facility.
- Knowledge of sterilization processes, aseptic techniques, theatre protocols.
- Familiarity with OT equipment and instruments, surgical instrumentation, monitors, lights, suction, diathermy is a plus.
- Good communication, coordination and teamwork skills.
- Ability to handle fast‑paced environment and adapt to changing theatre schedules.
- Strong attention to detail, reliability, and commitment to patient safety.
- Physical ability to stand for long durations, move equipment/instruments, and lift moderate loads as needed.
- Availability to work shifts/rotational hours as surgeries may be scheduled beyond normal hours.
