Ophthalmic Technician / Scribe

Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Ophthalmic Technician/Scribe to perform direct patient care, acting as the doctor's right hand by conducting preliminary eye exams, gathering patient history, administering drops, assisting with minor procedures, performing imaging (like retinal scans), and meticulously documenting all findings, symptoms, treatments, and plans in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) to ensure accurate charting and efficient patient flow, freeing the physician to focus on diagnosis and complex care

The Ophthalmic Scribe supports ophthalmologists and optometrists by accurately documenting patient encounters in the electronic medical record (EMR). The scribe allows providers to focus on patient care by recording histories, exam findings, diagnostic results, and treatment plans in real time during clinic visits.

Duties

  • Document patient encounters in real time, including: Chief complaints and history of present illness; Review of systems, past medical/ocular history, and medications; Examination findings and diagnostic test results; Assessment and treatment plans.
  • Enter data into the EMR accurately and efficiently
  • Prepare patient charts prior to visits and ensure completeness afterward.
  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
  • Communicate clearly with physicians, technicians, and clinic staff.
  • Track follow-up visits, procedures, and referrals as directed.
  • Assist with prior authorizations, imaging uploads, or other clerical tasks as needed.
  • Adapt documentation to different subspecialties (retina, glaucoma, cornea).

Experience

  • Prior experience in a medical office setting, preferably within ophthalmology or optometry clinics.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy (particularly ocular anatomy), physiology related to eye health, and clinical procedures.
  • Familiarity with ophthalmic EMRs (ModMed preferred) or similar platforms for documentation and scheduling.
  • Strong understanding of HIPAA regulations to ensure patient privacy and data security at all times.
  • Background in retail sales or front desk operations can be beneficial for supporting clinic customer service needs.
  • Basic knowledge of medical billing and coding processes related to ophthalmic services is a plus.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail and providing compassionate patient care.

Pay: $19.00 - $23.00 per hour
