Ophthalmology Technician

Job Summary

Duties

  • Conduct patient intake by gathering medical history, verifying insurance information, and updating electronic health records using EMR systems such as Epic.
  • Measure vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, and oxygen saturation to assist in comprehensive eye assessments.
  • Prepare patients for examinations by explaining procedures, ensuring comfort, and maintaining a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Assist ophthalmologists with diagnostic testing such as visual acuity assessments, intraocular pressure measurements, and slit-lamp examinations using aseptic techniques.
  • Support clinical procedures by setting up equipment, maintaining sterile environments, and adhering to HIPAA regulations to protect patient confidentiality.
  • Manage medical records accurately, including documentation of test results, treatment plans, and billing codes related to ophthalmology services.
  • Engage in retail sales of optical products like glasses and contact lenses while applying retail math skills to ensure accurate transactions at the front desk.
  • Maintain clinic inventory, order supplies as needed, and ensure all equipment is sanitized and functioning properly.
  • Provide exceptional patient care by addressing questions about procedures or optical products and ensuring a positive clinic experience.

Experience

  • Prior experience working in a medical office setting, preferably within ophthalmology or optometry clinics.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy (especially ocular anatomy), physiology related to vision health, and medical coding/billing practices.
  • Familiarity with EMR systems such as Epic or similar electronic health record platforms.
  • Experience with optical assessments or optical retail sales is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of HIPAA compliance standards to safeguard patient information.
  • Hands-on experience with intake procedures, vital signs measurement, and aseptic techniques in a clinical environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse patient populations including pediatrics; clinic experience in pediatric ophthalmology is a plus. Pay: $23.83 - $28.70 per hour
