We are looking for a detail-oriented and hands-on Optical Characterization Engineer to join our R&D or production team. You will be responsible for testing, analyzing, and validating the performance of advanced photonic components and systems, including metasurfaces, waveguides, laser optics, and imaging elements. Your work will directly impact the development of high-performance optical technologies for space, defense, telecom, and sensing applications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and execute optical characterization experiments for components such as lenses, metasurfaces, filters, waveguides, and free-space optics.
- Measure key parameters including transmission/reflection spectra, wavefront quality, beam profiles, MTF, optical efficiency, polarization response, and focal characteristics.
- Operate and maintain optical metrology tools (e.g., spectrophotometers, interferometers, profilometers, autocollimators, beam profilers, integrating spheres).
- Develop automated test setups using software such as LabVIEW, Python, or MATLAB.
- Analyze measurement data and generate reports that guide optical design iteration and quality control.
- Collaborate closely with design, fabrication, and packaging teams to establish validation protocols and improve yield and performance.
- Support customer or internal system integration with optical performance data and compliance reports.
Required Qualifications:
- B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Optical Engineering, Physics, Photonics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- 2+ years of hands-on experience in optical metrology or laser/optical testing (can include graduate research).
- Proficiency with optical instrumentation and lab alignment techniques.
- Familiarity with data analysis tools (MATLAB, Python, Origin, etc.).
- Understanding of optical design principles and system-level performance metrics.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with high-NA or nano-optics characterization (e.g., metasurfaces, photonic crystals).
- Knowledge of ISO standards for optical testing and environmental qualification.
- Familiarity with Zemax/Code V and/or COMSOL/FEM for simulating optical responses.
- Experience working in cleanroom or controlled lab environments.
- Experience with optical communication or imaging systems a plus.
What We Offer:
- Competitive salary and performance-based equity
- Access to advanced optical labs and test equipment
- Opportunities for technical leadership and career growth
