Orthopedic Physician (MD/DO) – Locum

Are you seeking a rewarding opportunity to provide specialized musculoskeletal care in a mission-driven environment? We are looking for a dedicated Orthopedic Physician (MD/DO) to join our Indian Health Service (IHS) team at Gallup Indian Medical Center (GIMC) in Gallup, New Mexico. In this role, you will deliver comprehensive orthopedic services, consultations, and call coverage while making a lasting difference in the lives of Native American communities.

This is a Contract / Locum Tenens MD or DO opportunity within an IHS hospital setting.

Position Highlights:

  • Full-time schedule with outpatient clinic and inpatient consults
  • Scheduled call coverage including weeknights, weekends, and holidays
  • Long-term contract up to 6 with potential extension options
  • Must be Board Certified (or Board Eligible) in Orthopedics or Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation with orthopedic focus
  • Minimum of 2 years of post-residency experience required
  • Prior IHS or locum tenens experience preferred
  • Any active, unrestricted U.S. medical license accepted

Orthopedic Physician Duties:

  • Evaluate and manage musculoskeletal conditions including fractures, joint disorders, sprains, and chronic orthopedic issues
  • Provide both inpatient and outpatient orthopedic consultations and follow-up care
  • Perform non-surgical orthopedic procedures (e.g., casting, splinting, joint injections, minor procedures)
  • Collaborate with surgeons, ER physicians, and primary care providers for comprehensive patient management
  • Participate in call coverage and respond to urgent orthopedic needs
  • Ensure proper documentation in the RPMS electronic health record system
  • Contribute to quality assurance, peer review, and performance improvement activities
  • Prescribe appropriate medications and therapies in accordance with hospital policies

Indian Preference Exercised:

Prairie Band, LLC is subject to Title 22: Employment Code of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. In accordance with Title 22, this position is designated as a TIER 2 position. Preference will be given to individuals to the extent required pursuant to Section 22-2-4(B).

Requirements:
  • MD or DO degree from an accredited institution
  • Active, full, and unrestricted U.S. medical license (state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or U.S. territory)
  • Board Certification (or Board Eligibility) in Orthopedics, Orthopedic Medicine or related specialty
  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
  • Current DEA license and prescribing eligibility
  • Minimum of 2 years post-residency experience in orthopedics
  • U.S. citizenship and residence within the United States
  • Excellent diagnostic, clinical, and interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR), RPMS preferred
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity to Native American and Alaska Native communities
  • Must be able to pass a federal background check
