Key Responsibilities:
Pre-Operative Duties:
- Prepare the operating theatre by setting up surgical instruments, equipment, and sterile drapes.
- Check functionality and sterility of instruments and supplies.
- Confirm and cross-check surgical lists and patient details.
- Scrub, gown, and glove in accordance with aseptic techniques.
- Assist in positioning and prepping the patient for surgery.
Intra-Operative Duties:
- Pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon and surgical assistants during procedures.
- Anticipate the surgeon's needs to ensure smooth workflow.
- Maintain the sterile field and monitor for any breaches.
- Count instruments, sponges, and needles with the circulating nurse before and after surgery.
- Handle specimens correctly for lab processing.
Post-Operative Duties:
- Assist with wound dressing and application of post-operative care devices.
- Ensure proper disposal of used instruments and medical waste.
- Decontaminate and restock instruments and equipment.
- Document all procedures and instrument counts accurately.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Registered Nurse with current nursing license.
- Perioperative Nursing certification (preferred or required in some regions).
- Minimum 1–2 years of OT/scrub nurse experience (may vary by employer).
- Excellent knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to stay calm under pressure and respond quickly in emergency situations.
- Good physical stamina and ability to stand for long periods.
