Job Summary:
The OT Technician supports the surgical team by preparing the operating room, ensuring a sterile environment, managing surgical instruments, and assisting during surgery. The technician plays an essential role in patient safety and the smooth functioning of the operating theatre.
Key Responsibilities:
- Preparation of the Operating Room: Set up the operating room with required instruments, equipment, and sterile drapes. Ensure the environment is clean and properly sanitized.
- Instrument Sterilization: Sterilize, disinfect, and prepare surgical instruments and tools before the operation. Ensure all tools are ready and functional for the procedure.
- Assisting During Surgery: Pass instruments to the surgeon and assist in retracting tissues or performing minor tasks under supervision.
- Patient Preparation: Assist in positioning patients on the operating table and ensure proper safety protocols are followed (e.g., patient identification, surgical site marking).
- Maintaining Sterile Field: Maintain a sterile environment by ensuring that sterile drapes and instruments are not contaminated during the surgery.
- Monitoring Equipment: Operate and monitor surgical equipment and machinery, ensuring that they function properly throughout the procedure.
- Inventory Management: Keep track of surgical supplies and instruments, maintaining an inventory of stock and notifying the appropriate personnel when items need to be replenished.
- Post-Surgery Duties: Assist in the cleaning and disposal of used instruments, dressings, and other materials after surgery. Help with the transfer of patients to recovery.
- Documentation: Ensure proper documentation of surgical procedures, tools used, and any relevant events during surgery.
- Safety and Compliance: Adhere to infection control protocols and hospital safety standards. Ensure compliance with regulations and standards related to patient care and surgical procedures.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Education: Typically requires a diploma or degree in surgical technology or a related field. Certification in operating room technology is often preferred.
- Experience: Minimum 3 years
- Technical Skills: Familiarity with surgical instruments, tools, and equipment; ability to understand surgical procedures and assist as needed.
- Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail, especially in maintaining a sterile environment and ensuring the correct instruments are used during surgery.
- Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with surgeons, nurses, and other medical staff.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods during surgeries and manage physical tasks such as lifting or moving equipment.
- Knowledge of Safety Protocols: Understanding of infection control and safety protocols in an operating room environment.
Work Environment:
- The OT Technician works primarily in a hospital operating theatre, where surgeries are performed.
- The role may require shifts that extend beyond normal working hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, depending on the healthcare facility’s needs.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand or walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and move surgical instruments and equipment.
- Ability to perform tasks that may require dexterity and attention to detail under pressure.
