Outpatient Senior Nurse Practitioner - Neurosurgery

The University of Maryland Faculty Physicians, Inc. is seeking an Outpatient Nurse Practitioner for the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

The Department of Neurosurgery is seeking a dedicated and experienced Senior Nurse Practitioner (NP) to join our Outpatient Neurosurgery team. The Senior NP will play a pivotal role in the preoperative and postoperative management of neurosurgical patients in the outpatient setting, delivering high-quality, patient-centered care, as well as contributing to the success of our clinical programs. This is a full-time, weekday position offering a rewarding opportunity to work alongside renowned neurosurgeons and a multidisciplinary team in a high-acuity medical center.

The Senior NP manages patients across two neurosurgical subspecialties, the Functional Program and the Brain Tumor Program. This includes intracranial pathologies, including brain tumors and other neoplasms, as well as patients undergoing evaluation and treatment for functional neurosurgical disorders (eg: Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, epilepsy). Responsibilities will include assessment, coordination of diagnostic workups, perioperative optimization, longitudinal follow-up care, patient and family education, and close collaboration with surgical, oncology, neurology, and allied health teams to ensure continuity and excellence in care. Additionally, as a key stakeholder in the success of these programs, the Nurse Practitioner collaborates with interdisciplinary team members, supports quality improvement initiatives, and helps drive strategic goals. Responsibilities include coordinating care delivery processes, monitoring performance metrics, fostering team communication, and serving as a key liaison between staff, leadership, and external partners.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Participates in mentoring activities. Precepts students.
  • Promotes understanding of disease processes in area of specialty/program.
  • Functions as a clinical resource for other team members including but not limited to interns, residents, fellows, nurses, and medical students.
  • Provides community education, health promotion and outreach.
  • Acts as a community health resource for specialty disease entity.
  • Works with physician leaders and administration to achieve service specific outcome targets for key metrics including clinical outcomes, LOS, cost of care and patient satisfaction.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities aimed at improving clinical outcomes and minimizing variation.
  • In collaboration with physician leadership and the multidisciplinary team, develops clinical pathways.
  • Participates in and leads quality assurance activities (i.e., chart reviews, peer review) and establishes standard of practice.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Master of Science Degree with completion of a primary care Nurse Practitioner program. Registered and currently recorded with the Maryland Board of Examiners of Nurses and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Maryland. Certified in area of specialty. (Copy of written agreement with physician signed by the physician and nurse practitioner and written approval by the Joint Committee for Nurse Practitioners pursuant to COMAR 10.27.07.06A.)
  • DEA and CDS eligible
  • CPR required
  • BLS required
  • ACLS and/or other relevant certifications as required by the department
  • Three years experience as a Nurse Practitioner is required
  • Demonstrated ability to promote professionalism through involvement in professional organizations, teaching, research, publishing, and/or certification in area of specialty
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills are required to interact with patient families, departmental units, medical and nursing staff on all essential matters
  • Maintains updated mandatory training
  • Updates immunizations as recommended per practice area

Total Rewards
The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of University of Maryland’s Faculty Physician’s Inc. salary range for this position. Some candidates will not be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, internal equity, responsibility factor and span of control, education/training and other qualifications.
