You’ll help promote library services, register participants for the Summer Reading Celebration, and share books and resources that encourage reading, curiosity, and lifelong learning.

If you enjoy working with young people, connecting with the community, and creating energetic, welcoming experiences, this could be a great summer opportunity.

What You’ll Do

  • Plan and deliver engaging, high-energy outreach experiences that promote the Summer Reading Celebration, including programs and book circulation at schools and community sites.
  • Register students and participants for the Summer Reading Celebration and distribute reading logs, incentives, and prizes.
  • Actively promote library services, programs, and resources to community members.
  • Provide friendly and responsive customer service by answering questions and assisting patrons with their information needs in a variety of settings.
  • Maintain and organize the Outreach Summer Reading book collection.
  • Track and maintain statistics related to Summer Reading Celebration visits to schools.
  • Prepare a thoughtful monthly report highlighting outreach activities and community impact.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned to support overall Library operations.

What We’re Looking For

  • A welcoming, service-oriented approach and a genuine commitment to hospitality toward patrons and coworkers.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Flexibility and adaptability, with the ability to respond positively to change and new ideas.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to identify issues and implement practical solutions.
  • Comfort using technology and the ability to learn new tools and systems as needed.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Demonstrated customer service experience, patience under pressure, and comfort interacting with a wide range of patrons.
  • Experience working with school-aged children.
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or training in education is preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and means of transportation to fulfill job responsibilities.

Why Work Here

  • You’ll join a team that values collaboration, accountability, and kindness. We celebrate curiosity, community engagement, and the small, meaningful moments that make public service rewarding. At KCPL, being a good teammate is just as important as knowing how to check out a book.
  • Positive Work Environment: Join a team that reflects KCPL’s core values—welcoming & diverse, caring & customer-centric, collaborative & community focused, responsible & professional, and reading knowledge champions. We support each other, work professionally, and take pride in serving our community with kindness and accountability.

KCPL helps people become lifelong readers and learners, connect with the online world, understand their community past and present, and access safe, comfortable spaces—both physical and virtual—to gather, learn, or work. Your work directly strengthens these services and the community we serve.
