Package Engineer

Job Summary: The Package Engineer is an experienced technical professional who leads packaging projects involving varying degrees of complexity from manufacturer quality concerns to continuous improvement to ground-up product development across all product lines involving legacy and sister companies. The Senior Package Engineer employs innovative problem-solving to provide technical options with cost-effective solutions. Collaboration with and education of all levels across all functions within the organization is a daily occurrence. The Senior Package Engineer role focuses heavily on project management, advanced technical problem-solving and cross-functional leadership to ensure packaging materials meet exacting quality, regulatory and supply chain requirements. This role requires advanced knowledge of packaging materials, package format manufacturing, packaging component filling machinery as well as validation protocols with focus on total cost optimization, compliance and sustainability.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Project Management & Technical Execution

  • Lead package development projects from conceptualization and design through validation and commercialization.
  • Design, develop and test primary, secondary and tertiary package systems to ensure product integrity and protection from manufacturing through the supply chain to consumer use.
  • Perform advanced analysis and validation to include compatibility with filling equipment, compatibility with the designated product and distribution testing.
  • Create and manage detailed material specifications to include technical drawings, material standards and palletization patterns for transit.
  • Provide packaging Bill of Materials to documentation specialists.

Optimization & Performance

  • Identify and implement innovative, sustainable and cost-saving packaging solutions with a focus on material reduction, recyclability, and supply chain efficiency.
  • Drive cost-saving and efficiency initiatives by identifying opportunities to optimize packaging materials, design, and processes.
  • Identify and implement sustainable packaging solutions and support the environmental goals of the company and their customers.
  • Ensure package materials and designs comply with all relevant industry regulations.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions for recurring packaging failures or line performance issues.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Education

  • Provide technical support and education to Sales & Marketing, Research & Development, Quality Assurance, Operations and Supply Chain teams.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to qualify new materials, tooling and packing equipment, managing technical trials and approval processes.
  • Collaborate with potential suppliers to qualify their versions of existing materials.


Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Package Engineering or other closely related technical field.
  • Experience: 3+ years of experience in package engineering, development or manufacturing.

Technical Expertise

  • Strong knowledge of packaging materials science and related manufacturing, converting and printing/labeling processes of flexible films, rigid polymers, paperboard and corrugated paperboard.
  • Extensive practical experience with package testing standards and validation protocols.
  • Proficiency in palletization software.
  • Demonstrated experience with packing equipment capabilities and manufacturing line efficiencies.
  • Understanding of Good Manufacturing Practices and relevant industry-specific regulations.

Abilities

  • Proven ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously, delivering results on time and within budget.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills for tackling high-impact technical challenges.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to explain complex technical information to non-technical personnel.
