DESCRIPTIVE STATEMENT:

The Painter position is a FLSA non-exempt position that is under general supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Superintendent. The painter performs outside and inside painting of buildings, structures, equipment, and vehicles; and does related work as required.

This job description is an overview and is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the functions and tasks required of the position.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Properly prepares surfaces for proper paint adhesion
  • Repairs, removes, and/or installs wall coverings
  • Tints paints to match existing wall colors
  • Uses sprayers (conventional and airless), brushes, rollers, and related tools and equipment
  • Install drywall, new drywall finishing and texturing, and patching and texture matching of existing wall surfaces
  • Works frequently in publicly occupied spaces
  • Patches and paints exterior stucco and masonry

IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS:
  • May perform the duties of similar classifications of an equal or lower pay grade
  • May be required to assist in carpentry, plumbing, and other trades
  • Painter will act as signatory authority for certification of required training for promotion advancements within this classification and other trade classifications
  • Painter will provide training and mentoring to lower paygrades and other trades/positions

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The physical standards an employee must meet in order to perform the essential job duties with or without a reasonable accommodation include, but are not limited to:
  • Ability to lift, carry, push and/or pull objects up to 50 pounds, occasionally lifting loads of 75 pounds or more
  • Considerable walking and standing, as well as other activities requiring a full range of body movement including bending, kneeling, leaning, sitting, stooping, crouching, pushing, pulling, and climbing
  • Perform manual labor in various types of inclement weather, such as heat, cold, wind, snow, etc.
  • Frequent hand/foot/eye coordination for operation of tools, equipment, and vehicles
  • Far and near visual acuity to read manuals, record data, monitor/observe instruments and gauges, and to safely operate equipment and adequately perform maintenance operations
  • Ability to hear verbal instructions and warning signals and for troubleshooting

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Must have knowledge of:


  • Proper surface preparation (sanding, priming, caulking, and masking)
  • Materials, tools, and supplies used in painting, installing drywall, and wallpapering
  • Safety procedures, and the ability to work at heights, setting up scaffolding and ladder work, and working from mechanical platforms
  • Polyurethanes, varnishes, shellac, driers, and fillers

Must have the skill and ability to:
  • Perform work to prepare surfaces for painting
  • Stain new wood to match aged / historical woodwork
  • Demonstrate sound judgment
  • Perform the duties of the position
  • Read and understand blueprints in order to understand the layout and measurements of City buildings
  • Think projects through from start to finish keeping a natural order
  • Paint with brushes and sprayers (both conventional and airless)
  • Utilize power sanders, hand sanders, fillers, stains, varnishes, lacquers, and stripping equipment to finish furniture and ability to apply automotive finishes
  • Utilize body tools, fillers, power sanders, and patching materials to perform body work
  • Ability to mix paints to proper consistency and color
  • Familiarity with methods of cleaning and removing paint from woodwork and metals for repainting is needed
  • Ability to work from windows, scaffold, and mechanical lifts
  • Ability to cut stencils
  • Ability to perform all Job duties in a safe manner

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above, this position requires the following:

  • A high school diploma or GED
  • A valid driver’s license at the time of application, and a valid Colorado driver’s license within 30 days of employment
    • License restrictions that may hinder your ability to drive on City business, such as an interlock, will be cause for disqualification
    • During the course of employment, a valid license must be maintained, and the employee must notify the City immediately upon changes to the status of their license
  • Minimum of five years of verifiable experience in residential, commercial painting, automotive finishes, or historical restorations

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
The employee will be exposed to extreme weather conditions, heavy lifting, and moving parts or equipment. Employee may be exposed to traffic, noise, heights, dangerous chemicals, disease, damp areas, foul odors, and confined or cramped working places. Employee will be on call on weekends, holidays, and nights on a rotating basis.
All required licenses and certifications must be maintained throughout the term of employment. Failure to obtain or maintain licenses and certifications may result in demotion or termination.
Due to Federal and State Criminal Justice System access requirements, classifications that access and maintain criminal justice information may also be required, as a condition of employment, to not have been convicted of and/or have pending charges of a felony or misdemeanor crime that would deny or otherwise restrict access to criminal justice information. This requirement applies to all existing City employees as well as external candidates seeking to fill positions that meet the given criteria.
