Position Description: Seattle Parks & Recreation Facilities Maintenance are seeking skilled Painters to join our team. These positions perform a wide range of journey-level painting duties, including surface preparation, graffiti removal, line striping, and other related maintenance tasks.
This role requires specialized knowledge of paints, coatings, materials, tools, and application techniques. Painters support the ongoing preventive maintenance and routine upkeep of Parks buildings, facilities, furnishings, and equipment by ensuring surfaces are properly prepared, protected, and finished.
We are currently recruiting for two (2) regular, benefited positions on the Day Shift between the hours of 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., on a 4-day, 10-hour shift. Additional candidates from this recruitment may be considered for temporary assignments for up to one year.
Job Responsibilities
- Perform Journey level painting work on Parks owned facilities & structures.
- Prepare surfaces for proper application of coatings by sanding, pressure washing, scraping etc.
- Mixes & matches paints and prepares them for application.
- Apply paint and other protective coatings such as toxic finishes, sealants, varnishes, stains, lacquers, enamels, and epoxies on a variety of surfaces including buildings, equipment, fixtures, etc.
- Pressure washing & graffiti removal on a wide range of surfaces: concrete, brick, metal, wood, glass, and painted structures. (may require abrasive blasting at times)
- Working knowledge and application of the use of proper coatings by brush, roller, and spray techniques.
- Maintain strong situational awareness, identifying safety risks such as spills, damaged surfaces, or security concerns.
- Restore surfaces to their original condition while minimizing damage.
- Match paint colors and finishes to existing structures.
- Mix and store paints, solvents, and chemicals according to regulations.
- Follow OSHA and safety regulations, especially when working at heights or with hazardous materials.
- Use proper PPE such as respirators, gloves, and harnesses.
- Handle chemical removers safely and dispose of waste according to environmental rules.
- Coordinate with dispatch and/or supervisor to prioritize high-visibility or urgent graffiti removal.
- Document graffiti incidents, including before-and-after photos.
- Work collaboratively with other trades crews and City departments, particularly when graffiti or maintenance needs involve shared infrastructure.
- Erect and dismantle scaffolding and work on stepladders, extension ladders, lifts up to 85’.
- Tape and patch sheetrock or wallboard.
- Maintain job status updates through online work order system.
- Paints parking lines at facilities' property.
- Experience performing inspections and implementing ongoing preventative maintenance programs in a commercial setting.
- Work assignments may include areas of confined space.
- May assist with training of apprentice.
- Performs other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.
Qualifications
Requires completion of a painter apprenticeship program or three years in the painting trade working under a journey-level painter performing a variety of work in the trade (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
License, Certification, and Other Requirements:
- Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
- Normal color vision is required.
Work Environment/Physical Demands/Other:
- May be required to work nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
- Required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
- Required to work outdoors in all types of weather.
- Work at heights on ladders or scaffolding.
- Frequently required to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Requires handling or working with toxic/hazardous substances.
- May work near heavy equipment.
- Required to work near energized equipment.
- May work in confined spaces.
- Dependent on business needs, candidates may be required to obtain a respirator clearance fit test.
Desired Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively prioritize and schedule maintenance tasks, aligning them with departmental needs.
- One or more years of experience working with shop tools and painting procedures.
- One or more years of experience working with fall restraints, and a good understanding of lead and asbestos awareness procedures.
- Assess project material needs, process requisitions, and track time and materials for each job.
- One or more years of experience performing drywall repair.
- Be highly motivated and able to work as a team member in a demanding work environment, meeting tight deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to proactively plan, organize, and prioritize painting projects by securing or procuring all necessary materials, supplies, tools, and equipment in advance.
- Ability to work non-standard hours, including nights, weekends, and evenings when required.
- Basic computer skills, including the ability to use standard office software and work order/asset management systems for tasks such as record-keeping, reporting, and communication.
- Competence in maintaining clear and comprehensive written records.
- Effective communication skills to coordinate maintenance activities, convey operational needs, concerns, and procedures.
- Exhibit a high level of proficiency in verbal communication to convey information effectively and professionally.
- Experience in interacting with the public coupled with a high level of proficiency in customer service.
- Experience maintaining multiple municipal or large commercial facilities.
