Job Overview
We are seeking an organized, detail-oriented Legal Assistant or Paralegal to support attorneys in probate, conservatorship, and elder law matters. This role involves drafting legal documents, filing court pleadings, managing case progress, and serving as a key point of contact for clients. The ideal candidate is energetic, compassionate, highly organized, and comfortable working both independently and collaboratively in a client-focused law practice.
This position is full-time at 34 hours per week Monday through Thursday in our Knoxville office.
Elder Care Law of Tennessee practices Life Care Planning with a focus on Elder and Special Needs Law, which are highly specialized areas of the law. Our firm is client-centered, with a focus on the unique legal needs of the elderly, individuals of all ages with special needs, and their families. We integrate legal, financial/public benefits, and care planning, delivering highly individualized services with honesty, respect, and compassion. Each case is handled with the unique goals and needs of the client at its center.
Duties
- Support attorney in completion of tasks to carry out clients’ legal planning strategies.
- Serve as a point of contact for clients who have questions about their planning or who need answers to questions regarding the status of their case. Listen to the client and effectively transmit the client’s questions, needs, and goals to appropriate team members.
- Utilize software systems and routinely review attorneys’ cases to ensure work for each client progresses according to the designated timeline.
- Draft Powers of Attorney, Advance Care Plans, Living Wills, and Caregiver Agreements according to the attorney’s instructions.
- Draft court documents related to probates and conservatorships and file them with the court.
- Draft attorney correspondence.
- Assist attorneys with administrative tasks as needed (e.g. tracking or entering time in Quickbooks; naming scanned documents and uploading to Actionstep case management system).
- Oversee case management of all probate and conservatorship matters assigned by the attorney.
Qualifications
- Associate Degree in Paralegal Studies, a paralegal certificate, or a minimum of two (2) years working in a legal support (Paralegal or Legal Assistant) role.
- Minimum of two (2) years of college education.
- At least two (2) years of paralegal experience preferred, especially in the areas of Elder Law and/or Probate.
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Comfortable working independently and confident exercising independent judgment (after training).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage changing priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic workplace.
- Highly attentive to detail, with command of business and legal writing, strong proofreading skills, basic math skills, and high standards for work product.
- Comfortable working with elders, people with disabilities, their families, and other professionals.
- Patient, compassionate, and tolerant toward clients and coworkers.
- Very adept with computers/technology. Should already be familiar with MS Outlook, Word, and Excel; will need to quickly become proficient with Actionstep client management software, as well as Teams and Zoom.
- Professional in appearance and demeanor.
- Maintains the highest standards of confidentiality.
- Has a clean background check and qualifies as a Notary Public.
Pay: From $45,000.00 per year
