Position Summary


This paralegal-advanced position provides legal support to the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance’s (OCI) work to investigate and prosecute insurance fraud. Under general supervision of the Chief Legal Counsel, this position independently prepares legal documents, organizes case materials, and supports the fraud attorney throughout hearings and the litigation process. The paralegal works independently on large, complex cases involving multiple parties and a significant amount of evidence. This is a new position with an opportunity to develop and grow OCI’s insurance fraud program.

Salary Information


Starting salary for the Paralegal-Advanced will be between $39.00 - $45.67 per hour, plus great benefits. This classification is assigned to pay schedule/range 07-03. A 12-month probationary period may be required. Current state employees will be compensated in accordance with the current State Compensation Plan.

Job Details


Due to the nature of the position, OCI will conduct background checks on applicants prior to selection. OCI does not sponsor visas and is not an eligible OPT employer for those with F1 visas. All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States, and to complete the required employment eligibility form.

This position has potential for a combination of telecommuting and in-person work after an initial training period has been completed. Some travel may be necessary, including out-of-state travel.

Qualifications


Minimally qualified candidates will have all the following experience:

  • Complex Case Management – Such as demonstrated experience managing complex legal matters, organizing and maintaining case files, tracking and meeting deadlines, preparing status updates for attorneys and stakeholders, and utilizing reporting tools or case management systems.
  • Paralegal Functions – Substantial experience performing advanced paralegal duties such as drafting legal documents and correspondence, organizing case files and exhibits, and calendaring matters.
  • Hearing or Trial Support – Such as experience preparing for and supporting hearings, administrative proceedings, or litigation, including witness preparation, exhibit management, and on-site assistance to attorneys.

In addition, well-qualified applicants will have one or more of the following:

  • Experience working with Wisconsin State Statutes and Administrative Code, or in one or more of the following practice areas: administrative law, licensing law, or litigation.
  • Education/Certification – Completion of a paralegal certification program or a related degree (e.g., business, English, writing, or library research).
  • Experience independently managing complex projects, including preparing appellate records and organizing and indexing exhibits.
