Position Summary
The Crew Chief is a paramedic who serves as both a clinical provider and a member of the shift leadership team. This position is responsible for delivering high-quality patient care, providing backup and support to field units, and performing advanced paramedic skills as needed. The Crew Chief also assists in coordinating daily operations, ensuring policy compliance, and maintaining situational awareness of field operations. Working collaboratively with the Shift Supervisor, Assistant Shift Supervisor, and other Crew Chiefs, this role helps manage shift operations and supports the Supervisor in directing and mentoring shift personnel. The Crew Chief responds to critical incidents, provides specialized clinical interventions, while coordinating EMS resources to support patient care and efficiency. The position requires strong clinical proficiency, sound judgment, discretion, and professional integrity while representing Spartanburg EMS with loyalty and dependability.
Minimum Requirements
Education
- High school graduate or GED
Experience
- 3 years of paramedic experience in a 911 emergency response system, or related field.

An associate or bachelor’s degree in EMS or a related field may count toward six (6) months of the required 3 years of paramedic experience.
License/Registration/Certifications
- South Carolina EMT-Paramedic Certification (NREMT).
- HAZMAT Awareness Certification.
- Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
- Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS).
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
- RSI Certification (required within three (3) months of hire)
- Lead Medic Certification (required within three (3) months of hire)
- QRV Certification (required within three (3) months of hire)
Preferred Requirements
Preferred Education
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in EMS or related field
Preferred Experience
- Four (4) or more years of 911 emergency response system paramedic experience
- Experience serving in a leadership, preceptor, or field coordination capacity is highly desirable
- Advanced clinical proficiency, leadership ability, and consistent professionalism in field operations.
Preferred License/Registration/Certifications
- Instructorship in the following:
o BLS
o ACLS
o PALS
o PHTLS
Core Job Responsibilities
- Maintain active status on two (2) SEMS Special Teams within three (3) months of hire as documented in writing by the team leader:
- SRT, QA, Bike, Advisory, Regional Medical Assistance (RMAT), SWAT, Protocol, 911 Communications, Peer Support, Employee Recognition.
- A Crew Chief may maintain active status on only one (1) SEMS Special Team if they serve as a team leader or have significant responsibilities on that team, with prior approval from SEMS Administration.
- Adhere to organizational values and commitments.
- Provide field leadership, oversight, and coordination for assigned shift operations, ensuring adherence to SEMS policies, Clinical Operating Guidelines (COGs), and safety standards.
- Represent the Shift Supervisor in the field and serve as the primary point of leadership contact for on-duty crews.
- Respond to incidents independently, at the discretion of 911 dispatch or Shift Supervisor, ensuring a timely and safe response while coordinating SEMS resources as needed.
- Respond to major incidents and assume EMS command until relieved by higher authority, coordinating patient care, communications, and resource deployment.
- Operate with autonomy and make sound, time-sensitive decisions in high-stress or complex incidents.
- Promote teamwork, initiative, and a positive influence on peer and subordinate performance through daily interactions and leadership presence.
- Monitor and evaluate field crew performance, addressing operational or behavioral concerns in collaboration with the Shift Supervisor.
- Uphold and reinforce organizational leadership and policy and procedure standards among peers.
- Demonstrate effective collaboration and communication with multidisciplinary partners including EMS, fire, law enforcement, and hospitals.
- Maintain real-time awareness of unit status, coverage, and system demands to ensure operational efficiency and continuity.
- Deliver coaching and performance feedback to crews, reinforcing clinical quality, professionalism, and policy compliance.
- Participate in performance improvement, training, and professional development programs as part of ongoing responsibilities.
- Support the Shift Supervisor with administrative tasks including scheduling, timekeeping, documentation, and incident review as directed.
- Conduct one-on-one or small-group training sessions at the direction of the Shift Supervisor or the Training & Quality Department.
- Serve as a role model for dependability, professionalism, and leadership; maintain composure and sound judgment in complex or high-pressure environments.
- Ensure consistent enforcement of policies and procedures while demonstrating fairness, discretion, and respect for all personnel.
- Maintain knowledge of current operational systems, equipment, and administrative processes to assist with supervisory continuity when needed.
- Participate in system-wide quality improvement initiatives and contribute to leadership development projects as assigned.
- Maintain operational readiness, professionalism, and alignment with organizational values in all aspects of field performance.
- Maintain current certifications, required training, and continuing education consistent with agency and state standards.
