PARKS AND OPEN SPACES DEPARTMENT (POSD) MAINTENANCE WORKER II

Description

Skilled worker that performs duties in grounds maintenance, janitorial, landscaping, hardscaping, forestry and horticulture.

Essential Duties

  • Maintains a safe work environment for all staff during daily activities in maintenance, installation, repair, troubleshooting, and design for parks and open spaces.
  • Provides guidance and information to park guests/users.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records of all applications, installations and work completed.
  • Repairs, replaces, and installs sprinkler irrigation components - heads, valves, pipes, fittings, timer/control devices, and other equipment as needed by digging, trenching and/or excavating.
  • Maintains turf, plants, flowers, shrubs, and trees such as planting, feeding, pruning, cultivating, watering and other duties necessary to promote health and growth.
  • Conducts visual inspections of assigned areas to assist with routine maintenance
  • Computer skills with basic word documents and excel programs.
  • Removes and cleans up litter from flowerbeds, hedge rows, fence lines, and medians.
  • Performs weed control by utilizing pre-emergent, post-emergent chemicals or spraying herbicides
  • Fertilizes and performs soil conditioning, aeration, seeding, top dressing and pest control
  • Janitorial and custodial duties such as cleaning, disinfecting, restocking and organizing for restrooms, maintenance building and city facilities
  • Decorate for holidays and other events.
  • Assist other crews as needed

Operates equipment such as a variety of hand and power tools, riding/push mowers, pickup trucks, backhoes, front loaders, tractors, dump trucks, brush chipper, stump grinder, utility vehicles, skid steer, trenchers, spray rigs, forklifts, mini-excavators, site dumpers and towing trailers.

SPORTS FIELD
  • Maintenance operations of natural and artificial turf/grass for soccer, softball, baseball, T-ball, and football fields.
  • Cleans, disinfects, restocks and organizing’s restrooms, dugouts, concession and maintenance buildings
  • Painting lines and goal posts
  • Experience Preferred
GOLF COURSE
  • Maintenance operations of natural turf/grass for golf courses
  • Sand bunker maintenance
  • Maintain greens, tee boxes, fairways, natural areas and driving range
  • Tree and Plant Care
  • Equipment maintenance and repair
  • Experience Preferred

PARKS

  • Maintenance operations of natural turf/grass
  • Playground equipment inspections, repairs and replacement
  • Horticulture – plant and flower care
  • Forestry operations
  • Assist with maintaining environmental lots and developed/undeveloped city property
  • Sports court maintenance

TRAILS

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES

May serve on various employee committees as required and assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent preferred. Two (2) years of experience in grounds maintenance, janitorial and/or landscaping work required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to understand the dynamics of landscape irrigation systems.

  • Ability to work at heights greater than 20 feet utilizing aerial bucket/platform.

  • Ability to deal courteously, tactfully, cooperatively and effectively with the public.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinate staff and the general public.

  • Ability to learn and identify common landscape plants, trees and pests.

  • Basic knowledge of welding, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, concrete/masonry and painting practices.

  • Knowledge of parks maintenance vehicles, equipment and tools.

  • Skills in trimming, pruning and repairing damaged flowers, shrubs and trees.

  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours, weekends, and holidays as needed.

LICENSING AND CERTIFICATIONS:

Valid state issued drivers license.

Obtain Forklift Certification within 6 months of hire.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED


Works under general direction of the POSD Specialist, POSD Supervisor, POSD Superintendent, and/or POSD Director with considerable independence in planning, organizing, and overseeing daily operations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a normal office environment. Frequent exposure to the outdoors in all kinds of weather is also required.


  • The City of Hobbs will provide 80% to 90% Heath Insurance Coverage from Single to Family coverage.
  • Employees are eligible for 100% short-term disability coverage provided by the City of Hobbs.
  • Employer PERA contributions 14.8% for general, 28.775% for HPD, 30.9% for HFD.
  • CDL pay - $6,000 per year (if applicable).
  • PTO accruals start at 12 hours per month (144 hours per year) and progressively increase based on years of service to 20 hours per month (240 hours per year) at year 21.
  • Bilingual Pay - $1,500 dollar incentive per year upon completion of yearly proficiency test.
  • Education Incentive - ($1,000, $4,000, $6,000 dollars - Associates, Bachelor's, Masters; degree must be relevant to position and above the current minimum requirements of the held position).
  • Longevity Pay - Begins at the completion of 10 years of service. Gradually increased.
  • Retention Incentive - $600 incentive yearly with years 1-9 of completed service
  • 13 Paid Holidays.
  • Bereavement Leave - 5 days per calendar year per personnel rules guidelines.
  • Military Leave - (120 hours per year for general, 183.75 per year for HPD, 360 hours per year for HFD).
