Parks Irrigation Worker

Nature of Work

Designs, installs and maintains sprinkler systems at City parks, recreation areas and various buildings.

Environmental Factors
Position functions ninety-five (95) per cent in an outdoor environment and is exposed to all weather conditions. Frequent exposure to dust and wet conditions; occasional exposure to noise, mechanical hazards and fumes. Required protective clothing includes steel toe shoes, safety glasses and gloves.


Physical Factors

Position involves digging, balancing, bending, stooping, climbing, crouching, kneeling, reaching, squatting; pushing, pulling and lifting items weighing up to eighty (80) pounds with assistance; hearing and visual acuity sufficient to perform essential job functions.
Work Situation Factors
Position may require overtime, on-call and extended hours. Operations run seven (7) days a week; night shift and/or weekends may be part of normal work schedule. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies.

Full-Time; Regular; Non-exempt, Union-Represented

This position is graded at BC06.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Designs and installs underground irrigation systems; reads and follows schematic drawings; draws maps for blue stake layout; prepares areas for piping; installs piping; attached risers at specific intervals; attaches sprinkler heads; disassembles all or part of the sprinkler system as necessary.
  • Maintains and repairs existing sprinkler systems; monitors revolving sprinklers to ensure uniform distribution of water; observes and listens to sprinkler valves to detect malfunctions; repairs or replaces parts.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs water lines, booster pumps, valves, wiring and timers.
  • Adjusts timers to ensure watering times are appropriate; digs out valves, heads and lateral and main lines.
  • Installs, tests and repairs back flow preventors, regulators and filters.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs drinking fountains.
  • Participates in the landscaping of areas which include constructing fences and repairing/installing playground equipment.
  • Purchases various parts; completes work sheets regarding activities.
  • Maintains motorized equipment and tools.
  • Participates in the training of new employees.

Minimum Qualifications

Equivalent to a High school diploma and two (2) years of experience in grounds maintenance or landscaping, including experience in irrigation maintenance and plumbing. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy.

Licenses/Certification(s):
Valid driver's license required. Position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City policy. Backflow prevention certification and a Journeyman license, preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of: Principles, practices, procedures, methods and materials regarding the installation, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems.

Ability to: Operate motorized light equipment and hand and power tools; perform basic reading, writing and mathematical calculations; maintain constant alertness and concentration; interact effectively with peers and the general public.

Skills in: Equipment and tool use.
