Part-Time Gardener

The Part-Time Gardener supports the daily care and maintenance of Old Salem’s kitchen gardens, flower and herb gardens, field crops, and historic orchards. Working under the direction of the Head of Garden Curation & Production, this position assists with all aspects of seasonal garden work, contributing to the upkeep of a nationally significant historic landscape.
This is a physically demanding, hands-on role focused on outdoor work. The position is centered on morning work periods, when the majority of garden labor is most effective, and plays an essential role in maintaining the productivity, appearance, and health of the gardens.
  • Interest in gardening, agriculture, horticulture, or related fields
  • Prior hands-on experience in gardening, agriculture, landscaping, or similar outdoor work is strongly preferred; this position is best suited for individuals with some familiarity working beyond a home garden setting
  • Willingness to perform repetitive, physically demanding outdoor work in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to follow direction, work independently when needed, and contribute to a team
  • Reliability and consistency, especially during scheduled morning work hours
  • Interest in developing practical horticultural skills through consistent, hands-on work
  • Positive attitude and willingness to engage in essential, routine garden tasks
Schedule & Compensation
  • Part-time position (typically morning-focused shifts Monday through Friday; schedule may vary seasonally)
  • Hours determined based on operational needs
  • Pay rate: $15.15/hour
  • Assist with daily garden work including bed preparation, planting, weeding, watering, mulching, and harvest
  • Support maintenance of vegetable, flower, and herb gardens, as well as agricultural display areas
  • Help maintain high standards of garden presentation for public visitation
  • Participate in seasonal planting, crop rotation, and garden transitions
  • Assist with installing and removing seasonal crops and plantings
  • Support harvest and post-harvest handling of produce
  • Assist with composting, soil preparation, and application of organic amendments
  • Support implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) practices
  • Monitor plants for basic signs of stress, pests, or disease and communicate observations
  • Assist with seed starting, transplanting, and basic propagation tasks
  • Support greenhouse or indoor growing systems as needed
  • Assist with basic orchard maintenance including pruning support, mulching, and general care
  • Support maintenance of perennial plantings as needed
  • Work closely with the Head of Garden Curation & Production and other horticulture staff to complete daily tasks
  • Participate in a collaborative team environment focused on efficiency and quality of work
  • Assist with setup and breakdown of tools and work areas
