HR Manager / Consultant — Part-Time, Remote

About the role

We are looking for an experienced HR professional to serve as our part-time HR resource on an ongoing basis. This is a foundational role — you will be our primary HR point of contact, helping us build and maintain compliant, well-documented HR & Compliance practices across a small, remote, multi-state team.

This position is structured as a baseline retainer of approximately 8–12 hours per month, with additional project-based hours available as needed. While this is a flexible, asynchronous-friendly role, we are looking for a partner who is readily accessible during the business week to support with time-sensitive matters. This is intended to be a long-term position.

What you'll work on

  • Day-to-day HR advisory — employee relations, performance management, and compliance questions as they arise
  • Multi-state employee handbook development and ongoing maintenance
  • HR compliance management across policies, practices, and documentation
  • Onboarding and offboarding workflows and management
  • Compensation and benefits advising and support
  • Culture and employee engagement strategy for a fully remote, distributed team
  • Support for hiring, offer letters, and employment agreements
  • Coordination with outside employment counsel as needed

What we're looking for

  • 5+ years of HR experience, ideally supporting small employers
  • Multi-state HR compliance experience helpful as well as California-specific experience
  • Hands-on experience navigating complex employee situations including legal matters, severance, disability accommodations, leave laws (PDL, CFRA, FMLA), and separations
  • Comfortable working independently without a team beneath you
  • SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification strongly preferred
  • Experience working alongside outside employment counsel a plus

Engagement details

  • Remote — work from anywhere in the U.S.
  • Flexible hours with regular availability during business hours
  • Ongoing retainer at ~8–12 hours/month with project-based hours available
  • $65–$95/hr depending on experience and credentials
