Position Summary

The Part-Time Librarian supports the mission of a comprehensive community college by providing student-centered reference, instructional, and digital library services that promote access, retention, and student success. The role advances equitable access to information resources across in-person, hybrid, and online learning environments and aligns with SACSCOC Principles related to learning resources (Standards 11.1–11.3) and qualified staffing, as well as ACCS policies and hiring practices.

Local Salary "L" Schedule- Part-Time
Hourly Range :$26.99-$35.40 per hour
Work Hours: Maximum of (19) hours per week


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Career Coordinator shall perform the duties as specified in conformity with policies established by the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees and the J.F. Drake State Community and Technical College Faculty and Staff Handbook.
Reference & Research Services
  • Provide research and reference assistance to students, faculty, staff, and community members in person and via virtual modalities (email, chat, text, video conferencing, and scheduled consultations).
  • Guide users in navigating print, electronic, and open-access resources, including library databases, discovery systems (EDS), and citation management tools.
  • Support foundational information and digital literacy, including ethical information use and introductory AI awareness appropriate to community college contexts.
Instruction & Information Literacy
  • Deliver inclusive, outcomes-based information literacy and library instruction sessions aligned with general education, transfer, and workforce pathways.
  • Create and maintain accessible online learning objects (tutorials, videos, LibGuides) for face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses.
  • Collaborate with faculty to embed library resources and instruction into the Learning Management System (Canvas) and course assignments.
Digital, Outreach & Student Success Support
  • Contribute to the library website (Stacks) and digital learning tools, ensuring usability and accessibility (e.g., captioning, alt text, universal design).
  • Participate in outreach that supports first-generation students, adult learners, and other underserved populations to improve retention and completion.
Archives & Institutional Support
  • Assist with organizing, describing, and providing access to archival or institutional history materials.
  • Respond to archival reference requests and support basic digitization or preservation activities as needed.
Professional Practice
  • Maintain awareness of trends in community college librarianship: online learning support, access services, OER, accessibility, and equity-focused practices.
  • Participate in collection development or resource evaluation as assigned.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by the Distance Education Library Manager, Assistant Dean of Instruction, Dean of Instruction and/or President

Qualifications

  • MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution
  • Minimum of 3 years of library experience.
  • Experience providing reference or instructional support in an academic, public, or community college library setting.
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with library technologies, web-based tools, and Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of modern community college library practices and inclusive pedagogy.
  • Ability to design and deliver instruction for varied learning needs and modalities.
  • Ability to learn new technologies and support users; basic troubleshooting of software and equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and effective time management skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience supporting online and hybrid instruction.
  • Familiarity with LibApps/LibGuides, discovery platforms, learning management systems (Autographics), or open educational resources (OER).
  • Experience serving diverse and non-traditional student populations.
  • Understanding of SACSCOC expectations for learning resources and qualified staffing in two-year institutions.
