The Vanderburgh Foundation, Inc (Vanderburgh Sober Living) is a charitable foundation dedicated to supporting individuals in recovery from substance use disorder by supporting a membership organization of recovery housing operators. Through structured housing, community engagement, and advocacy, we believe that every person in recovery can access opportunities to rebuild their lives with dignity. Our programs are rooted in compassion, evidence-based practices, and a commitment to advancing the rights of those we serve.

Position Summary

We are seeking a part-time Maine Staff Attorney to join our mission-driven team and provide legal expertise in advocacy, policy, and compliance matters that directly support individuals in recovery. This attorney will work closely with leadership, community partners, and advocacy groups to address systemic barriers, ensure our programs comply with applicable laws, and advance legal strategies that protect the rights of our residents.

Key Responsibilities

  • Represent VSL and our members in advocacy litigation, defense, and court hearings.
  • Represent members in administrative proceedings and other forums related to recovery housing and related civil rights issues.
  • Work with experienced in-house counsel to develop case strategies and pleadings.
  • Collaborate with staff and external partners to support policy initiatives, community outreach, and public education campaigns.
  • Stay current with legislative and regulatory developments affecting recovery housing, nonprofit operations, and disability law.

Qualifications

  • Admission to the Maine  bar and in good standing.
  • 1 year of legal experience preferred, with background in nonprofit law, housing law, disability rights, civil rights, or related fields.
  • Research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Commitment to social justice, recovery advocacy, and the mission of the organization.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a small-team environment.

Hours & Compensation

  • Part-time: Flexible, approximately 5 to 15 hours per week.
  • Compensation commensurate with experience, starting at $38 per hour.
