JOB DESCRIPTION


JOB GOAL:

The purpose of the Adult Education program is to: 1) provide specialized instruction to Adult English learners to improve their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and comprehension skills in English, mathematics skills and an understanding of the American system of Government, individual freedom, and the responsibilities of citizenship and/or; 2) provide students with the knowledge and skills in Mathematics, Language Arts, Reading, Science and Social Studies necessary to pass the Official GED® Tests and be awarded a State of Florida High School Diploma. In addition, this program prepares students for postsecondary education and the attainment of a postsecondary degree, certificate, or industry certification and employment.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited educational institution.
  • Certification by the state of Florida in appropriate area(s) and possession of necessary endorsements preferred.
  • Experience with target population preferred.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of current trends, research and best practices in alternative education methods and the ability to apply this knowledge to instructional practices for adults, English Learners (ELs) and other at-risk learners in the classroom. Knowledge of adult learning theory and methodology; current trends, research and best practices in the field of second language acquisition and the ability to apply this knowledge to instructional practices for English Learners (ELs) in the classroom. Plan, organize and provide instruction aligned with the Adult Education curriculum frameworks and English Language Proficiency (ELP) anchor standards. Ability to use available data to plan, differentiate instruction and monitor student achievement in a multi-level class. Ability to regularly use research and evidence-based reading strategies based on student needs. Ability to use and incorporate digital literacy and available technology in instructional practices to prepare students for the workforce and post-secondary goals. Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations, administration and staff at MTC.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan and prepare relevant class lessons aligned with the Adult Education curriculum frameworks and English Language Proficiency (ELP) anchor standards.
  • Encourage the development of English language communication skills and higher order thinking skills through appropriate assignments.
  • Implement a variety of research and evidence-based instructional delivery methods appropriate for adult learners and English Learners (ELs) that include group instruction, individualized instruction as well as computer programs that lead to student learning gains.
  • Consistently integrate technology in the classroom aligned with workforce development activities and anchor standards.
  • Encourage the development of communication skills and higher order thinking skills through appropriate assignments.
  • Develop and implement appropriate assessment strategies to monitor student learning.
  • Use technology effectively, support the use of instructional technology for student learning and achievement.
  • Use effective student behavior management techniques appropriate for adult learners.
  • Apply appropriate instructional accommodations and modifications for students with special needs.
  • Provide a positive environment in which students are encouraged to be actively involved in the learning process.
  • Establish and maintain effective record keeping procedures.
  • Cooperate with and support procedures implemented to monitor the accurate and timely completion of data collection and reporting requirements.
  • Collaborate with peers to enhance the instructional environment.
  • Assist in the enforcement of school rules, administrative regulations, School Board policies and state and federal law.
  • Recognize overt indicators of student distress or abuse and take appropriate action based on district procedures and law.
  • Maintain professional and ethical conduct with peers, parents and the community.
  • Perform and fulfill all professional responsibilities.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with employers, students, teachers, and the community.
  • Cooperate with and support the horizontal and vertical articulation of curriculum within MTC, as well as between MTC, secondary schools and higher education and community partnerships.
  • Inventory and ensure the security of MTC property assigned.
  • Implement and support School Board of Manatee County, and MTC Board of Governors policy, in addition to state statutes and federal regulations as they pertain to MTC.
  • Support MTC activities including recruitment, retention, guidance, drop-out prevention, health services, attendance, grading, testing, and other related areas.
  • Communicate, through the proper channels, to keep the immediate supervisor, Department Head, Assistant Director, MTC Director, ACT Dept. Director, and Superintendent informed of impending problems or events of unusual nature.
  • Attend MTC-related activities and events including, but not limited to, graduation ceremonies, career- technical student organization, and other instructional activities.
  • Develop positive MTC/community relations and serve as a representative of MTC in the community, and at trade and professional organization activities.
  • Attend and participate in staff and department meetings to discuss policy changes, instructional programs, potential problems, and resolution of existing problems.
  • Stay current in the subject matter through professional development, involvement in professional organizations and by attending professional meetings, conferences, or workshops.
  • Perform other tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position as assigned.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
