Job Summary:
Yearn 2 Learn Academy is seeking a reliable, engaging, and student-centered Chess Instructor to teach in-person beginner and intermediate youth chess classes in Lathrop, CA. We are looking for someone who enjoys working with children, can lead a structured and positive classroom, and can help students build strong fundamentals, confidence, and tournament readiness.
This role is ideal for a coach who can teach both beginner and intermediate students, maintain a productive classroom environment, and communicate professionally regarding attendance, lesson flow, and student progress.
Responsibilities:
- Teach in-person chess classes for beginner and intermediate students
- Lead fun, structured, and educational lessons
- Teach chess fundamentals, tactics, strategy, notation, sportsmanship, and game review
- Adjust instruction based on student level and pace
- Manage classroom behavior positively and effectively
- Keep students engaged and focused in a group setting
- Track attendance and provide brief updates after class as needed
- Assist with in-house games, practice matches, and tournament preparation when needed
- Submit simple class notes or tournament reports if requested
- Arrive on time and maintain a dependable, professional presence
Qualifications:
- Experience teaching chess to children in a group setting
- Ability to teach both beginner and intermediate students
- Strong classroom management and communication skills
- Reliable, organized, and professional
- Ability to explain concepts clearly to younger learners
- Comfortable leading small-group in-person classes
Preferred Qualifications:
- USCF rating, FIDE rating, or equivalent online playing strength
- USCF 1200+ preferred for this role
- Experience with scholastic chess, after-school programs, camps, or clubs
- Tournament experience as a player, coach, or organizer
- Experience preparing students for local tournaments
- Willingness to complete required youth safety/background screening if needed
Schedule:
- Weekday afternoons / early evenings
- Occasional weekend event or tournament support may be available
- Specific days and times will depend on program schedule and candidate availability
Compensation Notes:
Compensation depends on experience, teaching ability, playing strength, and whether the role includes only instruction or additional responsibilities such as tournament support or reporting.
