Overview:
We are seeking a full-time Patent Agent in our Olathe, KS location. In this role, you will be responsible for assisting with intellectual property matters, with particular emphasis in overseeing, preparing and prosecuting patent applications.
Responsibilities:
Essential Functions
  • Strategically develop and maintain Garmin’s global patent portfolio to align with the company’s business objectives
  • Prepare, file, and prosecute U.S. patent applications, including managing the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) electronic filings and engaging with USPTO personnel
  • Instruct foreign patent counsel in the management and prosecution of Garmin’s international patent filings
  • Collaborate with Garmin inventors to manage and review invention disclosures
  • Conduct patentability analysis and technology evaluations to inform patent filing decisions
  • Support Garmin attorneys with patent litigation, administrative proceedings, and licensing matters
  • Draft inter partes review (IPR) petitions and related filings
  • Manage e-discovery collection and production
  • Evaluate and respond to third-party subpoenas
  • Conduct prior art searches and third-party patent reviews
Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Minimum of 2 years experience working on intellectual property in the electrical and software fields
  • Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to work independently and proactively
  • Strong time management and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Team-oriented with a collaborative mindset and a positive, professional attitude
  • Demonstrated ability to creatively and aggressively solve challenging problems
  • High attention to detail and a commitment to quality
  • Superior organizational and analytical skills with keen attention to detail and quality
  • Demonstrated proficiency using the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Effective and accurate proofreading skills
  • Proven track record effectively working with internal colleagues at all levels of an organization in a customer service-oriented manner
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with high-stakes U.S. district court patent litigation and U.S. International Trade Commission investigations
  • Comprehensive understanding of USPTO administrative proceedings, including the inter partes review (IPR) process
  • Familiarity with intellectual property issues in the fields of navigation, communication systems, and wearable technologies
  • Masters Degree (or higher) in Electrical or Computer Engineering or Computer Science
  • Industry experience as an engineer or software developer
  • Proficient in one or more programming languages such as C or Python
