Patient Account Representative II

LOCATION: KAUAI VETERANS MEMORIAL HOSP | PFS POSITION STATUS: 1.00 | Permanent SALARY RANGE: BU03 | SR13 SALARY RATE: $46,800.00 (Annual Salary) based on the FTE JOB DUTIES:This is a regional position located in the Patient Financial Services (PFS) department of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua’i Region, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i. The HHSC Kaua’i Region encompasses Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), both designated as critical access hospitals (CAH), as well as the Kaua’i Region Clinics and its affiliated entities. The PFS department plays a critical role in managing our clinically driven revenue cycle system, which supports the organizational goals and overall financial health of the Kaua’i Region. It is the central hub where clinical and financial data is merged through interdepartmental collaboration, technology, and patient satisfaction; is responsible for a variety of revenue cycle services including admitting and registration (patient access), patient accounting, financial counseling, payer negotiations, price transparency, charge description master management, denials management, health information management, and financial informatics; coordinates activities related to payer credentialing, provider enrollment, claims management, payments, credit balances, insurance reimbursement, and self-pay management in accordance with Federal, State, and other regulatory requirements. The Patient Account Representative II (Hospitals & Clinics) is responsible for collecting cash by collaborating with all payors to ensure the timely recovery of outstanding accounts receivable and processing claims to maximize reimbursement for services provided. Duties include determining credit status, arranging payments, processing accounts for collection agencies in accordance with established policies, and performing other assigned tasks. This position involves completing a significant volume of work within constrained timeframes. The work schedule may include weekends, holidays, and/or evenings, and may require travel to various facilities within the region as needed. This position reports to the Regional Revenue Cycle Officer, position number 109768, or their designee. THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE: Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated; the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week. EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: High school diploma or equivalent. Relevant substitutions may be considered. GENERAL EXPERIENCE:Two (2) years of typing, stenographic, clerical work, cashiering, data input, customer service skills, or any combination of these experiences that demonstrate knowledge of English grammar, spelling, arithmetic, standard office equipment; and the ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, carry out procedures in clerical work systems, speak and write simply and directly, observe differences in copy, proofread words and numbers quickly and accurately, and operate various kinds of office equipment; and ability to deal effectively with others in eliciting information and providing service. SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR GENERAL EXPERIENCE:An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university may substitute for all of the General Experience required. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of work experience performing medical billing and collections in a hospital, long term care facility, outpatient clinic or clinic setting; interviewing patients and/or responsible persons to secure financial information, arranging for method of payment and extension of credit, and determining financial status; reviewing accounts for delinquent payments and contacting payer to seek payment. LICENSURE:Possession of a current, valid State of Hawai'i type #3 driver's license is preferred. SUBSTITUTION OF SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:Work experience performing billing and collections in an organization (i.e., financial institution, retail, or hotel); interviewing persons to secure financial information, arranging for a method of payment, extension of credit, reviewing accounts for delinquent payments, and contacting the payer to seek payment may substitute for one year of Specialized Experience. QUALITY OF EXPERIENCE:The number of years of experience required for any grade level represents the minimum amount of time necessary to qualify for the appropriate position, but length of time is not in itself qualifying. The applicant's work experience must also have been of a quality and scope sufficient to enable him to perform satisfactorily assignments typical of the grade level for which he/she is being considered. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: KNOWLEDGE OF:Office practices and procedures; grammar, spelling, punctuation and work usage; use of standard office machines; techniques of interviewing others to obtain pertinent information. ABILITY TO: Make arithmetic computations; compare names and numbers rapidly and accurately; file materials numerically and alphabetically; follow oral and written instructions; communicate positively and effectively with staff, patient and patient family; work harmoniously with others; understand, explain and apply policies, procedures, rules and regulations pertinent to the admission of patients to an acute, skilled nursing or outpatient hospital or outpatient procedure; keep matters confidential; interview others to obtain pertinent admissions information; ability to speak and write English.
