Job Title: Patient Care Technician (PCT) – Pre-Op PACU
Location: University Hospital, Indianapolis, IN
Schedule: Full-Time, Day Shift
Position Overview:
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) works under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN) as a non-licensed team member. The PCT provides direct patient care to designated patients and collaborates with the healthcare team to ensure safe, effective, and compassionate care. This role is vital in supporting patients through activities of daily living, mobility assistance, safety monitoring, and maintaining a clean and organized environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist patients with activities of daily living, including hygiene, feeding, and toileting.
Support patient mobility, transfers, and ambulation to promote safety and comfort.
Provide continuous observation, including suicide prevention and safety assessments.
Maintain the patient’s environment in a clean, safe, and orderly manner.
Collaborate with the care team to meet individual patient needs efficiently.
Follow established procedures and standards for patient care activities.
Communicate effectively with patients, families, and team members to promote understanding and care quality.
Exercise judgment and initiative in problem-solving and prioritizing tasks.
Adhere to infection control principles, including proper hand hygiene and aseptic techniques.
Perform physically demanding tasks, including repetitive movements and patient handling, safely and effectively.
Read, comprehend, and apply basic math skills for medication, supplies, and documentation tasks.
Attend to details and organize workload to ensure timely completion of care activities.
Qualifications & Requirements:
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or completion of the IU Health PCA education program.
Knowledge of age-appropriate care and developmental considerations for patients served.
Proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to maintain focus amid frequent interruptions and varying noise levels.
Ability to exercise good judgment, initiative, and problem-solving skills.
Knowledge of procedures, equipment, and software related to patient care activities (e.g., PCA/PCR/PCI procedures).
Understanding of infection prevention principles and aseptic techniques.
Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and repetitive movements safely.
Basic math skills and reading comprehension required.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

This is a full-time day shift position supporting pre-operative care in the PACU unit. The PCT plays a critical role in ensuring a safe, supportive environment for patients preparing for surgery.
