Position Title: Patient Care Technician – Full Time Days
Department: Special Procedures
Location: University Hospital
Position Overview:
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) works under the direction of the registered nurse (RN) as a non-licensed team member, providing essential direct patient care and supporting the healthcare team. The PCT assists with activities of daily living, mobility, continuous observation (including suicide prevention), and maintaining a clean and safe patient environment. This role is vital in ensuring patients receive compassionate, safe, and efficient care during their hospital stay.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist patients with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, and feeding.
Support patient mobility and repositioning to prevent complications.
Conduct continuous patient observation, including suicide prevention measures.
Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly patient environment.
Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
Follow established procedures and standards related to patient care activities.
Exercise judgment and initiative in problem-solving and prioritizing tasks.
Adhere to infection control principles and aseptic techniques.
Assist with basic procedures and utilize equipment and software related to patient care.
Maintain good personal hygiene and promote infection prevention practices.
Perform physically demanding tasks, including repetitive movements, with safety and accuracy.
Read, perform basic math, and organize tasks efficiently to meet patient needs within time constraints.
Qualifications & Requirements:
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or completion of IU Health PCA education program.
Knowledge of age-appropriate care procedures and standards.
Proficiency in communication, interpersonal skills, and teamwork.
Ability to work under high tension and stress, maintaining concentration despite interruptions.
Understanding of infection control principles and aseptic techniques.
Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and repetitive movements safely.
Basic reading, math, and organizational skills.
