UAB Medicine is excited to offer a new program designed for nursing students who are interested in a patient care technician (PCT) role at UAB Hospital facilities during the summer months to gain hands-on experience before graduation. This PCT position requires a minimum of 20 hours per week from May through August with an average of two shifts per week. Additional shifts may be available. Being a patient care technician (PCT) at UAB Medicine is the perfect way to gain hands-on experience for those pursuing a career in health care or while you’re in nursing school. This role assumes responsibility for certain technical aspects of inpatient care, as directed by the RN or LPN on the unit, and they work side by side with bedside nurses as part of a care team. PCT responsibilities on this unit can include: orienting parents upon patient admission, assisting with everyday infant care needs (bathing, rocking, soothing, consoling, diaper changes, and linen changes), monitoring vital signs (temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration, weight, input and output), performing EKGs, ensuring that rooms have adequate patient care supplies, notifying nursing staff of any issues or concerns, keeping patient rooms clean and sanitized, and providing appropriate emotional support.
To assume responsibility for certain technical aspects of patient care as directed by the RN/LPN for the hospital. To obtain and record vitals, weight, inputs and outputs. To successfully complete an in-house PCT training program. To demonstrate an awareness of patient and personal safety.
