Performance Scientist

Job Summary:
The Performance Scientist, National Team is responsible for interpreting race performance data for U.S. National Team athletes. Additionally, the Performance Scientist will evaluate performance metrics of the world’s top international swimmers to better inform National Team staff and athletes. This position reports to the Senior Director and Coach, National Team and will work closely with the National Team performance staff to provide detailed and actionable insights that inform training, race strategies, and long-term performance planning.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Collect and organize significant volumes of race footage and performance data for U.S. and leading international athletes.
  • Use preferred data analytics software to process and analyze race metrics.
  • Identify and evaluate trends in world-class swimming, including stroke counts, tempos, race strategies, kick counts, stroke techniques, and other performance factors.
  • Create detailed reports and visualizations for coaches and performance staff to inform training and race strategies using modern reporting and visualization platform(s).
  • Collaborate closely with National Team performance staff to integrate data insights into athlete development plans.
  • Oversee efforts to identify and acquire valuable new data sources, automating data collection when possible.
  • Collaborate with Software and Technology team to develop improved dashboards and software tools for tracking National Team data and metrics.
  • Maintain an up-to-date database of race performance benchmarks.
  • Present findings at team meetings, training camps, and competitive events.
  • Travel to domestic and international competitions to collect in-person race footage and performance data.
Other Duties:
  • Support research initiatives within the National Team Division related to performance analytics.
  • Provide intel and support to Performance staff to aid in making decisions around selection criteria, relay line-ups, etc.
  • Assist in the development of new metrics and methodologies for evaluating competitive performance.
  • Provide input on technology and tools that improve data collection and analysis processes.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills & Abilities:
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate data into actionable insights.
  • 3-5 years’ experience working with Python, R, or other statistical coding languages.
  • 3-5 years' experience working with data visualization/reporting tools (Tableau, Power BI, Sisense, ActiveReports, etc.).
  • 3-5 years’ experience working with SQL and SQL Server Management Studio.
  • Experience with modern data warehouse: Snowflake, BigQuery, or equivalent.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure in fast-paced, high-performance environments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for delivering technical findings to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Capacity to maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive performance data.
Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Data Analytics, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience in sports performance analytics is strongly preferred.
  • Background in competitive swimming or a strong understanding of swimming performance metrics preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge/experience of National Governing Bodies and the Olympic Movement.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to travel domestically and internationally up to 20% of the year.
  • Must maintain proper documentation that allows for international travel.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time and manage energy expenditure over trips that can last several weeks.
  • Must be able to lift and transport up to 20 pounds of equipment when traveling.
  • This position works in an office setting in the USA Swimming headquarters in Colorado Springs, CO; must be willing to relocate to Colorado Springs or the surrounding area.
Salary & Benefits:
  • Salary range for this position is $80,000 - $90,000 annually.
  • Bonus Eligibility: Based on company performance, this position may be eligible for an annual target bonus of 7.50%
